This is a Type 3 life vest, which is designed only to FLOAT the child, NOT to hold him/her on their back and face up!! All the critical reviews I read before ordering this life vest were concerned that it did not hold their child face up. BUT it is NOT designed to do that. For that purpose, one needs a Type 1 or Type 2 life vest, which this manufacturer also sells. This was clearly explained in the literature that came with the vest, but may not be obvious to those who are not used to the different classes of vests. As a Type 3 vest, this item is well constructed and it provides very adequate flotation for my grandchild, but it should not be used without an adult nearby in case the child needs assistance. This life jacket forces his face down into the water to where he wasn't able to lift his head out. We tried holding just the loop on the back but it continued to do the same thing. We had to keep him sitting on our laps or on one of our legs. The jacket also kept sliding up around his neck and would scrunch around his face, it didn't matter how tight we made the straps it would slip. It made it almost impossible for him to stay up on his own and just repeatedly forced him face down. We ended up buying a completely different style (floats on the arms) which worked 100% better.
