The Q88 is a MIDI keyboard controller only without any built in sounds so it does not have a headphone jack. It will rely on a computer for the audio input and audio output so you would want to connect headphones to your computer while using this. Can this keyboard not be played with a power cord adapter? How is this comparable to an electric keyboard?** A: You can use it without power adaptor if you plug it to computer using USB cable to control your software synth in your computer. It is just a MIDI controller therefore it does not have any built in Sounds. You can also use MIDI cable to trigger your external MIDI sound modules. You may need power for that purpose. I tried using it to control external midi devices without power adapter. As long as it is plugged in to computer using USB cable, it works for me. **Q: does it have to be connected to a computer to work?** A: It sure appeared that way to me. My 14 year old daughter did not want to have to have it connected to a computer all the time, as she wanted it in here room and the computer is not in there. If you grew up playing piano then having a keyboard that feels credible, especially if its a full 88 keys, is crucial. I had an 88 Key MAudio keyboard, and while it did the job, it didn't feel nearly as nice as this one.The keyboard noise is negligible and you won't hear it at all once you turn up your speakers.Between unpacking it and having it set up and fully functional was all of 5 minutes, with the computer connection being recognized instantaneously by Logic Pro X.Kurzweill's 88 key midi controller is probably the nicest one I've played. but it's waaaay more expensive. For under $200, you get very similar feel off the keyboard and a fully functioning midi controller that lets you get the work done, but also lets you practice your Bach. I read many of the reviews here before purchasing the unit, as I did not want an unnecessarily complicated experience trying to get my new board set up.Initial observations:* Set up was a breeze on a Mac. I just connected it via USB and--presto!--it immediately appeared in Audio/MIDI Setup and started working.* Yes, the length of the included USB cable is insufficient. Spend an extra dollar and get a USB A extension from Monoprice.* The keys require a little more pressure than my old Roland XP-50, but then that board is 15 years old. The Q88 is very comfortable to play.* Someone mentioned that the key edges are sharp to the point of being painful. They are perfectly fine. That was a weird complaint.* If I listen very carefully, I can hear spring noises when I press perhaps a dozen keys. Basically not a problem once the sounds are on.* Very simple interface, which in today's market of overly-complex hardware, is a definite plus.Please note that this is merely a keyboard *controller*, which means it does not have any sounds built into it the way a synthesizer does. To use this keyboard, you will need to have an external sound source which is triggered by the Q88. That is kind of common sense for recording musicians, but may not be so obvious if you are unfamiliar with the world of MIDI and digital music production. If you are looking for a unit capable of producing its own sounds, look for either a digital piano or a synthesizer-- they will cost considerably more than this controller, but will probably deliver the sounds you want.So far, I am very pleased with the Q88.
