It is not the most sturdy material, but it gets the job done. I primarily intended it to be used more for decoration, so I am not the least bit concerned about its ability to hold weight. That being said, the shelves are not quite as flimsy as some reviewers have made them out to be and I would trust it even with a full load of book or other heavier objects.Assembling the shelf was extremely simple and the directions were very well written; it took me no more than fifteen minutes from start to finish. I was also happy that the shelf did not off-gas as much as some of the furniture I have ordered from Amazon.
