Fluval Peat Granules, 500 Gram/17.6 Ounce

Some of the leading people making terrariums commercially have started to incoporate aquatic peat, so I thought I would add it to my supplies and try it out. While I cannot attest to how long it functions for filtration, nutrition, or even before breaking down. But, I can at least comment on it's texture and base function as an aggregate. It should be noted, that this is a material designed to be used in aquarium filtration systems. When you pick up a single granual and pinch it very hard, most pieces will not crumble in the way perlite would. I would compare this product's texture to something closer to akadama or pumice, though I honestly hope it is more durable, as many people do not realize that akadama and pumice will break down over only a fairly short amount of time. My favorite aggregates are calcined clay or lava rock. The granuals here are comparable in size to the smaller grain calcined clay or standard perlite, though notably much more rounded and I expect that to contribute to helping them not break down just in terms of being a functional aggregate in a drainage system. In terms of providing filtration or mineral nutrients, I expect these to help filter the standing water until they start to break down physically. There is some talk that horticultural charcoal pulling nutrients out of the soil and if those nutrients are released once the hydrophobic bits finally take in water and break down. I do not know the scene enough to clarify those aspects. But, I expect this material to benefit my terrariums long enough that when it wears off maybe my terrariumns can be balanced enough on their own by then. Regardless, this is a very affordable product with a consistent scale that is practical when layering in conjunction with calcined clay, brown dirt, or red lava rock, but also when mixing with charcoal and black lava rock for a robust drainage system that filters in multiple ways. I plan to keeep this on hand unless I see signs of trouble. So far so good. Try it! It's cheap enough.

I was having troubles getting my exceptionally hard water to neutralize with other products such as the water softener pillow, and PH Down. The water was so hard, the PH Down would be completely ineffective. The water softener pillow was working too slowly for the severity of my hard water, even after multiple recharges, and my fish were showing signs of stress. I added about 100 grams of Fluval Peat to my 75 gallon aquarium filter in a media bag, and within 24 hours I noticed my fish were playing and more active again. The GH, KH, and PH are all dropping at a rate of about 1 unit per day, which is a safe level for most fish to adjust to. I would not recommend using the whole 500 grams of the product at one time, as the product packaging recommends for a tank my size. I used about 1/5th that with exceptional results. The soft yellow tint this product left in the water seemed to make the fish very happy, and even dampened the very bright lighting that came with my new tank. (I was worried the bright led light would stress the fish, but now it is perfect.) I very strongly recommend this product for fish tanks with exceptionally high water hardness.

I was having a major PH issue and needed to make the water a little more acidic. My tank really wasn't big enough for a piece of driftwood so this was the next best option. I put some in a bowl and rinsed it well and put it in a bag in my HOB filter. It has not lowered the PH all the way to a neutral 7 but that is because I have not added enough. It got it from 7.8 down to 7.2 or so. Everything is stable now. The fish are happy and the algae is nowhere the issue it was. I can add more later if needed but don't want to risk any kind of crash. Keep in mind I didn't use a whole lot and I always run carbon but there were no tannins at all that discolored the water. It is crystal clear and now has a safer PH. I put it in a zip lock bag and have plenty for any need in the future.

This is cleaner and easier to work with than garden peat moss. I also feel it is safer as it is pure and meant for the aquarium. The box may seem small, but you don't need much and last a long time. I put some in a knee high pantyhose tied a knot and put it in the tank. By doing it this way all the pieces stay inside of the pantyhose and doesn't float around the tank. At first it floats, but I pushed it behind the filter stem under the water. In a couple of days the peat moss is wet enough to sink. I noticed the water becomes very soft, but it hasn't lowed the PH. The water does get a dirty, tea stained look and if you are directly above the tank you can smell a little bit of the dirt, but all the fish seem to love it. Fish like the neon tetras that would normally hide behind my plants and rock now come out to the front of the tank.

We have very hard water where I live. I bought this product because I wanted to lower the pH in my 5 gallon betta tank, and didn't want to use chemical buffers or buy an RO filter if I could help it. I tried almond leaves but those did nothing. I put about a tablespoon of peat granules in a mesh bag between the sponge and bioballs in my HOB filter, and overnight the pH dropped from 8.4 to 6.6 (-ish). Too much too fast, so I took out all but about a teaspoon of granules, and even that is probably a little too much, and prayed the betta would be OK. He's fine so far and the pH is still in the mid 6's. I'm actually now trying to bump it up a bit as I have a couple of nerites in the tank as well. As others have mentioned, there aren't any guidelines on the box suggesting how much to use. After about a week and a half the water has started to get that tea color (which I don't particularly like, but can live with if it keeps the pH down). So I'd recommend this product if you're looking for a natural way to lower pH, just go very light on the amount until you get a handle on how it impacts your water.

After I purchased this I found out the hard way that this will not work if your water is really hard. The water I have is PH 8.2, GH of 300-350ppm and a KH of 250-300ppm. The peat did not put a dent into the water paramaters with about 200 grams inside my 50 gallon aquarium. I was hoping to find a natural way to lower the PH and soften the water a bit. I have recently setup a RO/DI filter and will be making my water from scratch. I'm hoping to setup a freshwater planted shrimp tank and some of the shrimps I want need very specific water requirements to reproduce.

I have Fluval Peat Granules in ALL of my HOB (Fluval - Aquaclear) filters. It was not clear to me in the beginning how much to use, but I use about 1 teaspoon / Gallon in a fine media bag. It brings down the pH to about 6 in few days, and keeps it there for a while. It does not affect the TDS much, at least not in my tanks. Adds lots of tannins to the water. In short all that I need for my Apistos. As I use it in a filter, the tannins wash out in 6-8 weeks, and I need to change it. Probably this is the only drawback, but if you think about it, for what it does, and it is easily replicated, it's way worth the investment. Word of caution. If you use it in ANY filter setup (canister, internal filter, etc) make sure you put layers of filter-sponge between your peat and your bio-media, it clogs up the bio-media, it releases small, dust-like peat particles into the water, which is not a problem if its filtered out by your filter-sponge. The way my filters are setup is the following: bottom peat granules, middle 2 layers of sponge and top bio-media. Good luck!

I was so excited when my new tank cycled so I could add fish. I'm taking my son's fish so he can keep a warmer tank. Sadly, several fish died before I discovered that my pH was a lot higher than his pH. It made no sense because we use the same water/conditioners. I did a little research and learned that the driftwood in his tank was lowering the pH in a safe and natural way. That's when I decided to try peat. The peat adjusted my water overnight. I put it in a filter bag and in my canister filter. Within an hour my pH dropped from 8.5 to 7.9, and the next morning it was at 7.1. After another day, I added some fish. Now all his fish have been in my tank for two weeks and everyone is happy--Some of them surprised me with fry! The water will be a little yellow, which is fine for the fish, but may be disconcerting. A few water changes should clear it up over time.

Très bon produit ! J’en utilise environ 100 g dans le filtre de mon aquarium Rio 125 L que je change tous les mois. L’eau prend une légère teinte ambrée très agréable et naturelle, les poissons et les plantes semblent apprécier. Depuis que je l’utilise, je constate aussi moins d’algues. ⚠️ À prévoir : utilisez-la dans un petit filet ou une chaussette en collants adaptée, surtout ne la mettez pas directement dans le bac, sinon elle risque de s’éparpiller partout. Je recommande sans hésiter !

Utilizzata in un acquario dolce da 120 litri, questa torba si è rivelata un ottimo alleato per ammorbidire l’acqua e mantenere stabile il pH. Inserita nel filtro esterno all’interno di un sacchetto filtrante, ha iniziato a fare effetto già dopo 2-3 giorni. pH e durezza in lieve ma costante calo, esattamente come desiderato (da pH 7.2 a circa 6.6). L’acqua assume una leggera tonalità ambrata, molto naturale e piacevole, perfetta per pesci amazzonici o asiatici (tetra, betta, ecc.). Zero problemi per pesci e piante: nessun intorbidimento, nessun cattivo odore, anzi, l’acqua appare più viva e bilanciata. Azione graduale e controllabile in base alla quantità usata e al flusso del filtro. Personalmente l’ho sostituita ogni 4-5 settimane per mantenere costante l’effetto. Ottima anche per ridurre lo stress nei pesci e migliorare la qualità dell’acqua in modo naturale. In conclusione: torba di ottima qualità, consigliata per chi vuole abbassare il pH e creare un ambiente più naturale, soprattutto per pesci soft water. Un prodotto semplice ma efficace, perfetto per acquari dolci di medie dimensioni.

Este pack incluye 500gr de turba en bolas. Para usarla es recomendable comprar una malla para poder introducirla cómodamente en nuestro filtro externo. En mic aso tenia el agua con una dureza excesivamente alta y en dos días bajo bastante, por lo que debemos tener cuidado, ya que no es saludable para nuestros peces bajar la dureza tan drásticamente. Bajo mi experiencia, yo introduje 100 gramos de turba en una pecera de 150 litros y el resultado es extraordinario, evidentemente la turba deberemos cambiarla cada mes si queremos mantener nuestros acuario en condiciones y tengamos la dureza de agua de nuestra zona muy elevada. Su precio no es excesivo y es una solución natural a nuestro acuario. Este producto tiene el problema de teñir nuestro agua un poco en color amarillo si ponemos gran cantidad.

It's exactly what it says it is. I like the colour it gives the water and the smell. It works great for lowering the pH, you can put it in a little baggie of cheese cloth or something or let it soak loose in the water. (I would avoid leaving the peat in the water for too long as it may lower the pH more than you would prefer.) I use it to lower the pH in my aquariums. As I said, I really like the colour it gives the water and my fish like the lower pH. It's best to treat the water and take the peat out of the water before you add it to your aquarium, for a more consistent pH. If you leave too much peat in your aquariums or water of whatever sort, I believe that eventually the pH will eventually reach approximately 4.4 (if what google told me is true), which makes sense as I tested some in a jar of water overnight, the pH was lower than that of what my test kit could read.
