Unearthing history
Great replacement for my other detector, took out and did yard and field area. The tones are loud enough and separated to decifer quality finds or as we call it trash. Assembly was quick and easy to handle, light weight durable product. We have fun with the grandkids and friends finding history in the ground, never knowing what will come out. Screen is easy to change up to search for different metals eliminates iron or ferris, and treasure hunt.

Excellent Purchase
The Minelab 440 detector gets various reviews by various people for various reasons. People who feel its justified to spend $1000 on a detector and THINK they're going to find what others won't will think this is a toy. People who are not into Minelab will say how it doesn't perform like their company does. People that flat out DON'T know how to use it will bomb it. Well, the 440 is a fantastic detector. Excellent depth, stable performance, easy to read display, easy to understand settings. If you want to go out and FIND things, this is for you. The 340 is limited in features and the 540 has features you simply don't need to justify the price difference. In the 4 years I've had this detector, I have found several pieces of jewelry, old coins and revolutionary war relics. The coil is waterproof, but the entire detector isn't. Not a problem because I go to parks. There is no backlight, but again no issue for me as I detect in the dawn to dusk window. I don't use headphones as I like to feel that I'm safer without them as opposed to being a target for someone thinking I can't hear. The target blips are loud and concise. The 440 ships with the V10 coil, which is by far the BEST coil for any of the Vanquish series. You will get extra depth with the V12, but pinpointing and target ID will vary if accustomed to the V10 ID's. Have found that the BEST batteries to get are the Energizer Lithium. They are expensive, but the machine will function at top tier until all power is exhausted. You will not go wrong. Far from a toy and for the price, a well rounded fully functional detector from a NAMED brand.. Get a REAL Garrett AT Pro pinpointer. They sell for $125. You won't believe what you'll find. Target IDs to be aware of: 13 Nickel, 23-27 Copper Penny / Dime, 29-31 Quarter, 9 usually Gold.

Great quality & lightweight
Minelab's Vanquish 440 is easy for a novice to use right out of the box. It was lightweight and easily adjustable for a petite woman or much taller man to use. However, if you're going metal detecting for a long period of time, you might want to switch arms to give your muscles time to rest. During one week at the beach, I found coins, a necklace, a bracelet, tent stakes, zippers, and a lot of bottle caps and can tabs. The screen gives accurate readings about the depth of items, and the beeps sound different depending on the types of metals it detects. When two items are close together - or when one item is made with more than one metal - you'll hear different beeping tones. The Vanquish 440 is very sensitive! Although you can set it to "discriminate" between metals you want or don't want, I decided to let it detect everything, so I could learn how to hear how it sounds with different metals and see what they look like on the screen. And all of that digging and squatting is great exercise! The Vanquish 440 is also very good at pinpointing where the item is. When you get close, you can angle the coil to see which side of a hole or pile of sand that the item is in. (But to speed up my search, I also used the Garrett AT Pro Pointer.) The only reason I'm giving the Vanquish 440 four stars is because it doesn't have a "beach mode." When I used it on wet sand at low tide, it would beep when waves touched it, or when I dipped it into a hole with saltwater. (Since saltwater conducts electricity, the metal detector gets false positives and starts beeping.) There's probably a way to adjust the settings so it doesn't beep when it hits saltwater, but I decided just to stay away from the water and figure it out later.

Simple to use
Love it. Works way easy almost better than the Monster gold pro. Great for sand beaches.

Certainly worth the purchase for me
I did go through many different videos reviewing different brands and concluded that this was the best choice for me as I step up to the next level of detecting. Started about 2 years ago with the Bounty Hunter and found stuff but I wanted to find more but didn’t want to spend big money. The Vanquish 440 has not disappointed. It’s pretty set when you turn it on and choose your target level. Multi frequency is a game changer. It’s not wireless, which I didn’t care. You can make sensitivity and discrepancy adjustments as well. Where I go detecting it’s pretty much on Relic mode and I’ve found some amazing stuff up to 12” in the ground. It’s actually paid for itself already with what I’ve found just having it for a month.

Good unit
Nice unit and easy to setup, but you have to practice with it for it to work at its best. You need to interpret sound, number reading and depth to distinguish metals accurately

Finicky display screen
Screen goes back occasionally, but it does come back on after rebooting. Light and easy to use.

It lasted about 45 minutes of use. The original batteries that it came with lasted longer than the detector. After contacting minelab support, and reading a lot online, it seems that a defective unit can develop a "coil disconnected error" (Cd) and no longer works. I was really careful not to get this thing wet (even though the coil can be submerged) and looked after it. Minelab support did nothing. Having to return this now.
