can my kid riding his bike on the driveway activate this device?

depends how deep and how sensitive you set the probe. I know it will pick up a riding lawn mower. a bike may be to light.

There was a recall of these bout 14 mos ago, are the ones you're selling not part of the recalled sn's?

I called them and they were very up front about the issue and the corrections they made. mine has had no problems
