Vulkan lies in state beneath the Fortress of Hera, and yet many of his sons still refuse to believe that he is truly dead. After a seemingly miraculous rescue by the Ultramarines, Artellus Numeon, once captain of the Pyre Guard, urges the other Salamanders on Macragge to leave Imperium Secundus and return their primarch's body to the home world of Nocturne - there to be reborn in the flames of Mount Deathfire. But Numeon grapples endlessly with his doubts and fears for the future of the Legion while their foes seek to carve out new destinies of their own.... Review: One of the best HH books - This one is a refreshing change from much of the HH (although I have enjoyed most of them so far). I don't think a shot is fired in anger in the first 55% of the book, according to my kindle page counter thing. Most of the conflict is psychological. The buildup to the conclusion is very satisfying. Some of the side characters have fun stories - especially the guy with the huge collection of arcane knowledge and a giant crazy board. That guy and his arc entertained me. One issue, more with the series, is that the order in which you read the books can make things odd or confusing. In this book, two of the more important characters are adversaries, but in a different book, they are allies... and I unwittingly read them in the wrong order. Not a huge deal, but something that happens with a series of this nature. Review: Really Good - Reads like a screenplay. I like it a lot. Can’t wait to read the next. Hope it is as good or better.

Really Good
Reads like a screenplay. I like it a lot. Can’t wait to read the next. Hope it is as good or better.

Solid read
Good book, but Numeon is kinda a douche. They try and make him seem loyal and stoic and steadfast, but the writing just makes him seem like a douchebag and unlikable.

Vulkan is one of my favorite Primarchs and I've been waiting quite a while to get this book. My only dislike is that Black Library is taking so long to put these books out in mass market. Mass Market was the only available thing when I started buying the Horus Heresy series and now that they are doing hardback, trade paperback, and lastly mass market it's almost 2 years between release and mm. Other than that, fantastic story.

Once it gets going, you won't want to stop.
This book picks up where Vulkan left off on Macragge. While it is a bit slow to start, once it gets going it really takes off and you want to keep reading just one more chapter, which is easy to do as the way Nick Kyme writes (chapters are relatively brief) the chapters almost will you to read another before putting it down so you can finally go to bed. As you get answers to the questions you begin the book with, new ones arise to take their place and you're left wanting more.

Taking Vulkan home
This is the story of the Salamanders, by all rights a Chapter that should be dead. With their dead primarch, they try to get home to make the impossible possible. It's a doomed story, with the ending that has to happen.

Hope lives
Numeon is my new hero. This was fun. Salamanders go hard. Might be my favorite legion for now. Looking forward to the next one.

A Slog
I wish someone would let Nick Kyme know he isn't Shakespeare. This book is such a slog. The writing is overwrought and badly done. His archaic way of writing is affected, not dramatic. I'm not asking him to dumb it down, I'm asking him to just tell the story. The author should have a little more discipline. This was pretty much unreadable but I want to have read the entire series so suffered through. The story is such a good one, too. It's a shame it got this treatment.

Too long
I like the Salamanders but this book was unnecessarily long considering there are hundreds of pages centred only on the good guys running around with a corpse while being chased by baddies. At least the pacing of this book was decent though.

"Across the shadows"...

Great end to an emotional story
It took me a while to finish this book, I often left it for days before going back to it. I think it was frustration due to the amount of setbacks and bad fortune Numeon faced on his epic journey back to the Salamander homeworld. Whomever reads this book will go through the same emotions as the main character and come out the other side ready for the next chapter in this saga. Brilliant book!
