is it good for self-defense?

Well, it's a bit long to conceal, so everyone will see you walking around with a machete which may act as a deterrent. If you live in an area where everyone carries machetes and you might need to use it for defense, then that's a different story. The blade is heavy and will chop through many unarmored opponents. The handle shape and rubberized coating will help you keep a firm grip as it becomes covered in the blood of your victims. The safety loop has a firm snap that keeps the blade securely stowed to avoid accidental withdrawal. This may impede your speed at deployment, so keep that in mind. While this may work well for defending yourself against slow moving zombies, this would not be my weapon of choice for fending off armed bandits. If you have ranked up your heavy blades skills, then perhaps you could quickly turn them into un-armed bandits, unless they have a gun or a knife intended for combat.

Does it come with a case or cover ?

It comes with a sheath that you can put on a belt. I like that the belt loop snaps so you don't have to take your belt off to attach it. The sheath has a snap-loop so it stays firmly secured when not on your belt, too. So yes, it has a cover. No, it does not have a full case that fully encloses the entire blade and handle, but not sure if that's what you're seeking.

It's pretty heavy. Eyeball estimate is about 3/32".
