Perfect Storm, The (DVD)

I lived on the northeast coast, had my share of encounters and experiences with professional fishermen. They got the drinking part right, that’s for sure. Not saying it isn’t a tough and dangerous job, it is, and that is why it pays so well, but this movie was so corny, so unrealistic, and trying too hard to be oh so dramatic. And Diane Lane, I don’t care how “plain” you can make her, she was completely and totally miscast.I watched it because it was based on a true story, because of my interest in the sea in general, and because one of the boats used in the film came from the local fishing fleet where I lived. It was entertaining, I suppose, but the 4.5 stars rating is a little frightening.

What can I say, living on the coast of Maine I frequently watch fishing boats depart and return from their days at sea. So, the story line is real. The acting is believable, with the slight exception of 'Boston Accents' of Mark Wahlberg, who is an Massachusetts Native, and Diane Lane, who I hate to find any fault with. I've always been a fan of hers, he, this movie made me a convert.Of course, much creative liberty has been used, but very well. I've visited the Crow's Nest, the bar portrayed in the movie, which is tiny and not directly on the wharf, nevertheless, the movie captured the essence of the local 'dive'.Thankfully the owners didn't take advantage and capitalize on the venue, such as the Cheers inspired watering hole in neighboring Boston. The score by James Horner is haunting, and is now my second fave Horner Score, Braveheart will always be 1st! George Clooney, I forgot he was George Clooney as he captured the role. The supporting cast all hold their own.Looking for a movie to watch on a storm driven, windswept, gray day, this is it! You will feel a part of the story and you, too, will await for a safe return.

There's an okay story in the heart of this, but it's swamped by enormous waves of corniness and trying way too hard to be an epic, classic sea tale. Everything about it is as overblown as James Horner's relentless and repetitive score. Also, if you know anything about Gloucester and the Cape Ann region, you know a lot of it is phony and unrealistic. The climax is well done, and there are good moments along the way to it, but it's a long, often tedious voyage to get there.

For me, it was a perfect storm for watching this film again. I was in Portland Maine with my bride of 30 years. After some sightseeing and a lobster dinner on the harbor, I just HAD to watch this movie again. I'm not a film critic, but on that night, it was pure magic for me (my bride dozed a bit, but chuckled at some of the great lines, especially Bugsy's and Irene's). There is some great dialogue here, and yes, some that's a little hokey. I don't care. I've watched it at least a dozen times, and I hope to watch it a dozen more.

One of my favorite movies ever --and I can't sail and I don't even like to fish! Whenever I see any of these characters in other movies, I think for a second... "Wow, he made it big... he used to just be scraping by as a deckhand on a fishing boat in Gloucester, Mass!" The casting is spot-on and facilitates an interaction between the men that gives a depth to the movie before the main action even kicks in. This is an easy movie to fall into, especially with the variety of tranquility and relentlessness in the musical score.

The Perfect Storm is a disaster movie but with humanity and restraint. Usually this genre has something like a skyscrapper on fire or a passenger jet with a large ensemble cast who all get to freak out as they attempt to survive. Yes it has those elements but confines them to one fishing boat from Massachusetts who got caught in the middle of The Perfect Storm of a hurricane and a storm front.The movie begins by giving a slice of life of the working class fishing town of Gloucester. It’s one of the few times they hired regular looking people for much of the cast and extras. Yes you have George Clooney as the captain and Mark Wahlberg as his part of his crew but most of the rest just looked like common folk.Of course it’s the storm that drives the film and they definitely make it a harrowing experience. What’s more remarkable was that half of it was special effects and yet it still worked. The conditions the movie creates with the waves and the storm, etc. is insane.

I have come to love this film over the years. I suppose I expected something more when it first released. There was so much hype about the novel and the film. I see now that is such a personal story. Men who go down to the sea to make a living, trying to make a better life, men trying to survive day to day and not just men, but women too. In each crew member there lives a story. Dreams, love, the open air, the sea... they are such wonderful and noble things. I suppose I originally expected a story bigger than life, but THE PERFECT STORM is life, it is living and dying ...that is part of the circle. And James Horner's score, I see now that this is one of his greatest scores. It is beautiful, it is haunting, it is powerful and intimate. That is how I feel about THE PERFECT STORM.

When I saw who was in this I just had to watch it, and I'm sure glad I did. True to life account of what the men and their families go through trying to earn a decent living. The special effects of the storm were fantastic and believable, Nature at its worst/best. One thing that most of us don't get to experience is the camaraderie that happens when you go through severe hardships with other people. They, in every respect, become your family, and that lasts a lifetime.

A powerful and emotional drama epic.

In den 90er Jahren waren Katastrophenfilme echte Kassenschlager: Unter anderem Twister und Dante's Peak lockten viele Besucher in die Kinos. In dieses Genre gehört auch Der Sturm (Originaltitel: The Perfect Storm) aus dem Jahr 2000, Regie führte Wolfgang Petersen. Die Vorlage lieferte ein Sachbuch von Sebastian Junger: Es geht um Fischer aus der Küstenstadt Gloucester in Massachusetts, die im Jahr 1991 mit ihrem Trawler Andrea Gail weit auf den Atlantik hinausfahren, um Schwertfische zu fangen. Hinter ihnen braut sich allerdings ein sehr schwerer Sturm zusammen. Da jedoch die Eismaschine des Schiffes, die zur Kühlung der gefangenen Fische dient, den Geist aufgibt, beschließt Kapitän Billy Tyne (George Clooney), das Risiko einzugehen und durch den Sturm zu fahren, um den wertvollen Fang noch rechtzeitig in den Hafen bringen zu können. Eine Entscheidung, die schwerwiegende Folgen haben soll...Die Geschichte basiert auf wahren Ereignissen, aus dramaturgischen Gründen wurde aber, wie oft in solchen Fällen, viel dazugedichtet. Zum Beispiel heißt es im Film, es handle sich um den schwersten Sturm, der bis dahin aufgezeichnet wurde - in Wirklichkeit war das nicht der Fall. Bis der Sturm aber losbricht, vergeht gut die Hälfte des Films, in der die Charaktere und ihre persönlichen Geschichten ein wenig beleuchtet werden. Spannend ist das nicht wirklich, zumal hauptsächlich auf Stereotypen zurückgegriffen wird. Da ist der Kapitän in finanziellen Schwierigkeiten, dessen große Liebe natürlich die See ist und der seinen Männern stets den großen Fang verspricht. Bobby, die zweite Hauptfigur, gespielt von Mark Wahlberg, fährt immer wieder auf der Andrea Gail mit hinaus, obwohl seine Freundin Christina (Diane Lane) das gar nicht gut findet - doch irgendwo muss das Geld ja herkommen. Und dann sind da noch Dale (John C. Reilly) und David (William Fichtner), die sich eigentlich nicht leiden können, später aber natürlich doch noch zu Kumpels werden.Um die Geschichte auszubauen, wurden die Crew eines Segelboots, das ebenfalls in den Sturm gerät, und die US-Küstenwache mit eingebaut. Letztere konnten zwar auch in der Realität nichts für die Besatzung der Andrea Gail tun, doch immerhin die Segler konnten sie retten - und das passiert natürlich auf heroische Weise und mit ganz viel Pathos. An Pathos mangelt es Der Sturm übrigens wahrlich nicht, man findet ihn massenhaft in den Dialogen und im Soundtrack - den Vogel schießt aber endgültig die Stimme von Mark Wahlberg bzw. seinem Synrchonsprecher aus dem Off gegen Ende des Films ab. Während Bobby im Meer ersäuft, ersäuft der ganze Film im Kitsch. Ein paar Logikfehler gibt es auch: Zum Beispiel bleiben Becher und andere Gegenstände an Bord der Andrea Gail wie angeklebt auf dem Tisch stehen, obwohl das Schiff stärker schwankt als mancher Aktienkurs während der Coronakrise. Warum gibt es dann trotzdem drei Sterne? Weil der Film trotz aller Kritikpunkte passable Unterhaltung bietet und für das, was er ist, gut gemacht ist. Gucken kann man ihn also mal, man sollte nur kein Meisterwerk erwarten.

Great character development coupled with the essence of truth create intense feeling for these people. You are invested in the outcome. Cgi has improved over this time period but the close-up water scenes are amazing...made me go to "special features" to see how they did it. Its a movie you can watch again. Thats the only kind I buy.

Also der Film hat schon ein paar Jährchen auf dem Buckel und ist in Sachen CGI-Technik nicht mehr ganz so clean, doch insgesamt punktet er mit einer tollen Besetzung und gut inszinierten Bildern. Dazu noch ein Tiefgang zum Thema Geld und Liebe. Was braucht der Mensch um glücklich zu sein? Ist es Macht, Geld, Dominanz oder etwa Ruhm? Nein, es ist und bleibt eben Geborgenheit, Freundschaft und einen starken Partner an seiner Seite zu haben. Genau dies vermittelt der Film und schaffte es sogar, ein paar Tränen aus mir herauszukitzeln. DER STURM ist ein Film, den man sich alle paar Jahre immer und immer wieder anschauen kann. Daumen hoch!

Man merkt dem Film das Alter mittlerweile an, insbesondere beim gezeigten Stand der Funk- und Ortungs-Technik, etc. Trotzdem ist er immer noch bildgewaltig und einfach gut gespielt. Und mal abgesehen von der Dramatik sind die Darstellungen des Sturms und des Meeres einfach grandios.
