I know this is probably an odd question but how long is the string on these tags typically? Would they fit around a carboy neck?

I just measured the white string and laid on a ruler measures 4 1/4" doubled from the knot to the tip of the tag. It would depend how large the neck was...I hope this helps!

Can these be used with my tagging gun? It just seems like a lot of time and effort to string when I have a tagging gun.

I don't think so unless you do not use the string. The paper tag has a hole in it with the string already attached.

Does ink pen writing smear on these?

You can write on these with a pen without the ink smearing.
