Great Book!
This is one of the greatest books I have ever read! Dorothy Sayers translation is incredible and she offers tremendous insight into past history and and provides much needed background to enjoy this timeless classic of the Western Canon. It is also easy to understand why Dante ranks high up in Western Canonical literature along with Virgil and Homer. What made the book enjoyable also was that, prior to purchase, I viewed online documentaries about Dante's Inferno which is what I would recommend but even then, you will not anticipate all of the actions of the book.

This is the Barbara Reynolds completion of the Dorothy Sayers translated edition that I thought far better.

This is clearly the best translation and commentary on the DC. Even though the last 13 books of Paradiso were completed after Sayer's death, the overall work holds up to a very high standard.

Dorothy Sayers has done an excellent translation job. It is interesting to read this translation, as she was a British writer.

The print is very small and the paper quality is dismal. I expected much better quality from Penguin Classics.

Still a classic
For anyone who hasn't read the 3 volumes of the Divine Comedy by Dante all I can say is try and enjoy! The notes enable the modern reader to understand some of the more obscure allusions but it is the enormous sweep of the story which carries the reader along. Dante is escorted through Hell, Purgatory and Paradise in a nonstop journey to help him save his soul from damnation. The insights into the human mind and condition are just as valid for today as they were in the early 14th century! For instance, Dante has set a place in Hell for the flatterers and corrupters of language whom he knew well in his day. Today that place is probably full of spin doctors and advertising executives!

Wonderful Interpretation 2
I love the interpretation and the plentiful notes. Dorothy Sayers and Barbara Reynolds did an excellent work. I appreciate this kind of passion.
