Packing tape from cutting open packages tends to get all gummed up on the serrated edge version, though it is easier to cut things like rope or zip ties with the serrations. Gerber is a name I trust. Mine are great. I looked further into this and that logo is a logo that was retired in 2005. This information is posted in the about us - history page on Gerber's website. I would have confidence buying this knife, as long as you understand that it is an older make of it. **Q: Where is it made?** A: Package said china,but,I have to sayIf mine broke today, I'd order another one tomorrow. I've got no gripes about this knife. Hell even Buck is having some of their stuff made there. Also ,the Kershaw I was looking at was made there,and twice the price. While Amazon usually has the best prices (about 2/3 cheaper), I went to a big box "outfitter" store to try out some different models since knifes are tools that you really have to hold to see if they are "right" for you. Here are my observations: Pros: + Easy to open one handed, the spring assist is very helpful + Positive lock, working to keep it closed and open, which is useful for keeping all of your fingers attached + Sharp blade right out of the package and it holds an edge nicely + Sturdy belt clip Cons: - Somewhat "cheesy" looking grip, I almost passed it up without trying it out because it looked cheap to me - Mechanism makes a grinding sound when the blade is closed, but I'm hoping that it is just a wearing in issue While I doubt this knife will last as long as my last Gerber, it is a very good tool for daily use in our small shop.
