loved this film as a kid as an adult still love it and still entertaining as hell

I absolutely adore Monster House! This movie came out of nowhere and instantly became a staple in our household for the Halloween season—though we honestly watch it year-round. It perfectly hits that sweet spot of being genuinely spooky without being too terrifying for younger viewers, while still being smart and funny enough to thoroughly entertain adults. The motion-capture animation (produced by Robert Zemeckis and Steven Spielberg) is fantastic. It gives the characters a distinct, slightly exaggerated look that perfectly suits the horror-comedy genre. The titular house itself is a terrifying, personality-filled villain, and the animators did an incredible job making it feel like a truly living, breathing threat with its unsettling eyes, snapping porch, and tongue-rug. What makes this film stand out isn't just the scares; it's the heart. The core trio of kids—DJ, Chowder, and Jenny—are immediately likable and relatable. They feel like real neighborhood kids banding together to face a bizarre, grown-up problem. The mystery surrounding the house's origins is surprisingly emotional and well-written, giving the story an unexpected layer of depth and sadness that elevates it far above a standard children's horror flick. The pace is relentless, the jokes land perfectly, and the climax is pure, cathartic fun. If you're looking for an animated film that captures the thrill of a neighborhood adventure and the unsettling joy of a good scare, look no further. This is a five-star classic and a perfect family movie night choice! Highly, highly recommended.

Great movie, old school!

My daughter loves this movie, she's 5. Kid themed. No bad language. No adult jokes. Just spooky haunted house.

I watch this every Halloween and have since I was young. I like it. It’s nostalgic for me as I remember watching it for the first time and being afraid of the old man. Made my husband watch it this year with me and he’d never seen it. He admitted it was actually pretty good.

I had to think a while before rating this because I'm stuck between 3 and 4. I feel like it was 3.7, so I rounded it up to 4, though it's not really on par with others I've rated 4. I thought it was fun to watch. Granted, the people are a bit shallow and not developed, and it's kind of silly. But in my opinion every movie does not have to have in depth characters. This was just a fun animated movie, not something I'm going to write about for a college course. Chowder was incredibly immature, but that's teenage boys for you. The little girl at the start on the tricycle was annoying, and idiotic for not paying a lick of attention to where she was going. (I'm surprised so many thought she was cute.) The babysitter was what I expected -- somewhat immature and a bit mean. Her boyfriend Bones was also immature, and probably drugged out, and probably the worst character. I'm glad he wasn't in it a lot. Jenny might be the best character; I didn't like her at first because she seemed like a trained monkey coming out of that school, but she somewhat left that mindset once she started working with the boys and proved to be a smart addition. I expected it to be scary -- I guess I didn't have a clue what this would be. It wasn't "scary" exactly, but there were a few things that made me jump and were even creepy. But, I wouldn't recommend it for little kids. The animation was odd, and I later discovered it was done with motion capture. I didn't know they did that for animation, but I'm not an expert. That said, I thought the house was depicted really well and was creative. It seemed like a real living being, and seemed more realistic than most of the people. I didn't watch in 3D and didn't even know it was, so I can't speak to that. Addressing some other things... I was really expecting at least some of the 1-star reviews to complain that they chose the black cop to be the ditzy one (and he *was* incredibly stupid), and that he talked in a very stereotypical way. Surprise! I only saw a couple of comments on that. As for the sexual innuendo -- I honestly don't think younger kids would even get this. Just because the adults get it doesn't mean young kids will catch on. I think it's teens I'd be more worried about, since they would likely get it, but you maybe wouldn't want them seeing it. But, it's really nowhere near as bad as some people are making it out to be. I'm amazed at how many people think the PG rating is inappropriate as that will make parents think it's appropriate for kids. That is NOT what PG means! It does, in fact, mean that you need to be checking into the movie because it might *not* be appropriate for kids. PG = parental guidance, and the movie may contain things you believe are inappropriate for your kids. So you check into it, and you decide how you feel. If you don't understand ratings, that's on you. Stop blaming the producers for it! I think you're mixing it up with G. I had no kids watching it, but I like animated movies, and I'm fine with movies that are kid-appropriate as long as it isn't targeted specifically at younger kids. And this was some fun.

One of the best animated films I have ever seen because it has humor that adults can appreciate and kids will be able to enjoy as well. A cartoon with an actual story line. Stay off my lawn is not always a threat
