Are they plastic free?

The standard PE has been replaced with a compostable PLA, as has the normal PP/PE packaging. And the normal polyester/polypropylene covers have been replaced with 100% bamboo fibre. 
They are not 100% biobased though. The elastane ruching and front panel are not biodegradable.

Question 2

How big do these come up? My son is only 18kg, but he's 115cm tall so some size 6 nappies leak as he's too tall...

Hello,
Our nappies tend to come up slightly larger that other brands so they may be a little big and he might be better with size 5.  We do a trial bundle (1 pack of nappies and 1 pack of wipes) on our own website (mamabamboo).  Single packs of our nappies are also available from Ocado.

Can they be put in your council compost bin?

Hello,
We would recommend checking with your local council to see if these can be put into the compost bin or not as every council has differing waste collections and some councils offer a separate nappy collection. I suspect that the council will say no the nappies cannot be put into the compost bin and need to be put into general waste.

If the nappies go into the local council bin, the compostable elements of our nappies will biodegrade in current UK landfills but at a slower rate than within best practice situations. UK landfills are not managed to promote biodegradability at the moment. They are densely packed and lack the natural microbes, oxygen and light.  If the nappies are incinerated it is burning natural material rather than plastic.
We are working with local environmental groups to campaign for industrial composting services within council landfills.  We are currently trialling an industrial composting service in Bristol.  Where composting is not viable, we are encouraging councils to invest in recycling services for nappies.
