However, this is the well-known digital vs analog comparison. Those who prioritize readability can opt for digital.Back to why this is great, especially for the price- Large, insulated handle stays cool, can safely and securely grab the thermometer from a hot pot- Steel frame protects glass, won't rust- Scale is easy to read, in both F and C, marked for candy stages and deep fry- Clip is adjustable, allowing the thermometer to slide up and down for shallower/deeper pots- Bottom stand-off keeps bulb in liquid and avoids direct contact with pan, for accuracy- It can even stand freely, much better to clip it, but the bottom allows it to stand on its own in a pinch- Package is durable, reusable plastic and protects the thermometerMy prior thermometer was an oversize glass tube with an adjustable clip on the glass vial. Real simple.The edge it had was that its liquid channel was extra-wide, which made it easy to read.But it was just a glass vial with a sliding metal clip, it went in the drawer with nothing to protect it.The only advantage was readability, but again, if that's the priority, digital is best anyway.This thermometer's glass is protected by a steel frame, and comes with a reusable package, so even if it jiggles around in the drawer, its protected. I prefer this one ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4.0 out of 5 stars Accurate & effective, but poor clip design *by W***R on Reviewed in the United States on December 4, 2020* This thermometer is a huge improvement over my old basic tube thermometer. I like the fact that the structure keeps the bulb from resting on the bottom of the pan, and the liquid level is easier to read (doesn't fog up). The numbers and handy candy reference points printed on the metal are easy to read, and the tube doesn't seem to fog up. My complaints (and reasons for docking a star) are:1. The poor design of the clip. I had to bend outwards a little to clip onto my pots, but it still pulls halfway off of the back of the thermometer (since the thermometer is flat and the pot is curved). I have to be very careful when stirring around the thermometer in the pot, so I don't knock it off.2. The base can be hard to clean, since there are grooves and nooks and crannies around the base of the bulb. I recommend using very hot water and a scrub-brush, rather than a sponge (which will likely get chewed up) to make sure you get all the residue out of the corners. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5.0 out of 5 stars Reliable, clips well and easy to read. *by P***Y on Reviewed in the United States on October 19, 2020* I made sponge candy (or honeycomb candy,) for the first time and this thermometer made it SO easy. I made a single batch so the thermometer did not set deep enough. I tipped the pan a little after the bubbling began, so that the glass part of the thermometer was submerged a little. Extremely carefully, as candy makers know, these recipes would make third degree burns look wimpy. 'Very carefully' is easier with the well made clip on the back! Practice placing the clip before your mixture gets to molten lava temperatures. It reads rapid and accurate. This is not a bottom touching thermometer. And if it were, there would breakage risk.It cleaned easily and seems rather sturdy. Save the bubble wrap and box to store it, because this type of glass tube deserves delicate storage.This is just like the candy thermometer that I inherited from an aunt.
