The object of putting your virgin router into modem mode is that it then allows another device to be the DCHP server. To "allocate" the IP addresses. On a network you can (usually) only have one device that does that. As this is a dumb splitter, you need to leave the virgin box in router mode. There are a gazillion youtube videos on this if you get stuck.
