The Missing Piece My Gut Needed — What My Probiotic Alone Didn’t Fully Address
I’m 50 and have been on a long-term gut health journey dealing with bloating, constipation, and ongoing digestive imbalance. My probiotic and going gluten free helped, but something still didn’t feel completely right. That slightly unsettled feeling never fully went away. Adding sodium butyrate is when things started to feel more balanced for me. If you’ve ever felt like your digestion is “better” but still not fully where you want it to be — that’s exactly where I was. This isn’t something you feel overnight, if you’re looking for immediate relief, this may not be the right fit. I started with 1 capsule and worked up to 2. It took about a week for me to start noticing a difference, which felt realistic and gradual. I began noticing less bloating after meals, less pressure, and fewer uncomfortable episodes. Overall things felt more stable and settled. I take 2 capsules in the evening spaced away from my other medications. One bottle lasts about 50 days at that dose. Consistency has made the biggest difference. What really confirmed it was when I tried a different version of sodium butyrate and didn’t have the same experience. Within a few days discomfort returned. Once I switched back, things settled again within about a week. That experience made me realize how much formulation can vary. One thing to know upfront — the capsules have a strong butyric acid smell that lingers on anything they touch. No aftertaste, no bad breath, easy to swallow, and no side effects for me. Just worth knowing if you’re sensitive to smell. The product has been consistent every time I’ve ordered — I’ve reordered several times. This made the most sense for me after I already had some basics in place but still felt like something was missing. If you’re dealing with bloating, gas, or that ongoing “not fully right” feeling — this may be worth adding to your routine. For me, it worked gradually, not instantly. Consistency is everything.

Works for IBS-D! Better than the magnesium/calcium formulas. Had some side effects.
I’ve been using this for several months now, and just updated my review. It’s really annoying with the amount of people who post something online about how amazing a product is after trying it for a few days then you never hear from them again because it was a placebo effect. I tried the calcium/magnesium formula of butyrate around 10 years ago, but my GI system couldn't tolerate it. That was probably because of the magnesium content, which is a strong laxative. I'm also male and don't like getting too much calcium, which is bad for us and easy to over do. Additionally, all the research studies out there are around sodium butyrate. There's pretty much no research whatsoever around calcium butyrate or magnesium butyrate! If you don’t know already, butyrate is a short chain fatty acid found in butter, and in lesser quantities in certain cheeses. It is also produced by your intestinal bacteria. Numerous studies have purported it to have numerous beneficial properties. Unfortunately, butyrate only makes up about 2.7% of butter. So, you would need about 22 grams of butter (a little over one and half tablespoons of butter) to get the butyrate in one of these capsules. Anyhow, I had suffered from severe mostly morning IBS-D for 20+ years after several courses of antibiotics for acne as a teen. A little over a year ago I finally found a high fiber food I could digest by blending pinto beans and increasing them slowly in my diet up to a couple cans a day with no side effects. This helped me tremendously. Then a few months ago I discovered this formula. I started taking 4 a day, but started getting weird gut issues, nausea, dry skin and lips. I moved down to a couple capsules a day, and finally stopped it altogether. Right after I stopped it I became stopped up for nearly a week, which has never happened to me. Then things started to go backwards a little. I decided to add the sodium butyrate back a month ago small amounts at a time, and now I’m able to eat pretty much anything, including all the super healthy high fiber fruits and vegetables I could never eat. Most days now I end up emptying out the capsule and gagging down just half (or less) of the powder inside instead of taking a full capsule. Or, I talk one capsule every other day. If I take any more than that, I start getting side effects again. After doing some research, I saw that nausea was reported in one of the studies on it, along with vomiting. After doing a Google search, I saw someone else who posted in on online discussion forum about this same side effect after discontinuing sodium butyrate. If you aren't familiar with the NLM's Pubmed, you should Google it and look for research articles on sodium butyrate (make sure to do an advanced search for sodium butyrate in the title). You will find numerous studies regarding sodium butyrate's beneficial properties in most aspects of health including cancer, sleep, inflammation, brain functioning, insulin sensitivity, and more. There are however a couple studies reporting that excess butyrate beyond what is produced by a normal host of bacteria in your gut, can actually cause damage, hyper-permeability, and inflammation! So, if you have gas a lot or fast transit such that there's a lot of fermentation going on in you, you may already have too much butyrate in your system. Google's scholarly article database (scholar.google.com) is also a good platform for searching research studies. Sodium butyrate also functions as a histone deacetylase inhibitor in human health.

For Dogs Helpful (4 Stars) - For IBS-C Harmful (1 Star)
I am taking this product for IBS-C. PROS: It came fresh and is not as stinky as another brand I tried, but it is still VERY stinky. I purchased this brand because it does not state any fillers or additives that many other brands have. It was working at first (about a week and a half). It stopped some of the really bad IBS symptoms I was experiencing almost immediately, the first day I tried it! CONS: After about 1 week I became so constipated and dehydrated that I could not eliminate at all and my my skin was so dry it was flakey feeling and in several areas horribly itchy, and became red and swollen around my eyes. I felt like an old lady with wrinkles around my eyes I never had before. It took a couple of months to finally gain most of my soft skin back, although, it returns once in a while without consuming enough water everyday (8-10 glasses). This never happened to me before. Also, my hair became extremely dry and started falling out like crazy! It subsided only after about 2 months of discontinued use. Dose Taken: I went from 1 whole pill to 1/4 pill with no relief in less than a two week trial period (I took: 1 time a day and alternated the days to 1 pill every other day after about 4-5 days of use.). I was originally alternating it with Cal/Mag Butyrate the first couple of day then discontinued the Cal/Mag Butyrate completely because I thought that this might be the cause of this sever dehydration. It wasn't. LATER I did a little more research realized this product is most suitable for the people with IBS-D and for Colitis. We have 2 dogs with two different forms of Colitis and it worked great for them! (see below) PROS: I heard that Butyrate works great on animals. So I tried it with these 2 dogs I have with Colitis. Oh My! It works so good that I can now let them chew bully sticks again for a few minutes every other day! This is such great news because their teeth were becoming so horrible, not even brushing helped. We have to be very careful on the dose according to the weight of the dog and they still cannot be on any diet, but we can occasionally give them a treat (couple times per week) and they both manage to handle it. Constant monitoring is a must, and every dog would be a different case, just like humans, but we are so happy with the results we see in both of them. (Just a side note: One dog is a Standard Poodle and will be 14 years old in May [it's 3/4/1] and had arthritis in her back hips really bad, this treatment even helped her get up from the floor a little easier, most of the time! My Star Rating was hard to determine. For the Dogs I gave it the 4 Stars, but for IBS-C I would of given it a 1 Star!
