Comrade Eric. If there were any harmful chemicals used in the making of Soviet backpack from four decades ago we’d know by now. Be a great patriot and purchase this but of useful nostalgia while you can from any capitalist regime as long as it’s less than $45.00. It’s made of canvas and needs a wax coating to make it water proof. Prost!

Would this be practical for school

I like this backpack a lot, and you can store quite a bit in it. But it's not your normal backpack as far as modern designs that you may be used to. You will have to learn how to assembly it for daily use, I you tubed the instructions, after that I was able to assembly it. It is VERY dependably, rugged and reliably. But remember it is a WW11 design and the soviets made it what it is, but it's much different from it's U.S counterpoints as far as assembly and securing your gear/ once items are packed, but after that it's a walk in the park Kasanskie. (Kasankie remark from Top Gun movie lol) GOOD PRODUCT!

Is it okay to wash or will something happen to it?

Sure you can wash it. It kind of hardens up. It will stand on its own when wet. The bag actually can hold water losing very little. I would dry it in the sun. I own 2 Veshmeshoks. I really like them.

Can I wash it in my washer and dry it in my dryer?

Probably, I haven’t ran mine through the washer but the canvas is pretty sturdy
