Press and release essentially. I don't know why I love this so much more than a regular pump where the product comes down but I do. I love the lotion being dispensed upwards like water through a fountain and the amount it dispenses is perfect. Never too much or too little. There are many different ones on Amazon - I liked this one the best because it's all white with the exception of the clear cap (which is great). I abhor white things w/a chrome accent in my bathroom products. Just all clean, white plastic is the way too go. Chrome cheapens things when next to plastic as far as I'm concerned.One other feature that these airless pumps offer is the ability to decant very thick lotions, even balms into the container. Usually thick lotions or balms are in glass jars because you just can't dispense them effectively through a pump less the pump cylinder thing is really broad and thus dispenses too much and even then it always gets stuck. This one has very few mechanical parts. You can easily decant you thick balm into this very wide chamber at the top - about 2 inches across with a clean spatula, screw on the top and then depress. There is no valve or other part that the balm needs to travel through. The way it works is there is a spring at the bottom that forces the lotion up towards the opening at the top. I'm not explaining the mechanics very well but essentially if you have a thicker lotion that you love that you want to get out of a jar (and stop exposing that overpriced lotion to air which degrades those expensive ingredients every time), you want to get your product into this airless jar. You won't be able to decant into a regular pump (or not easily and not without losing a lot of product because most regular pumps have too small of an opening - this one is really wide - you can get a teaspoon in it easily). ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5.0 out of 5 stars This works! The lid did crack tho *by S***R on Reviewed in the United States on March 28, 2020* I use a face cream that comes in a tub which is unhygienic to dip fingers into daily. Transferred the cream into this pump dispenser and its easy to pump out and not feel like I’m introducing bacteria every day. Wish I’d known about this a long time ago.Edit-after having this for a couple weeks the lid has developed cracks. I’m sure it will eventually break and I’ll pitch the lid out. It doesn’t bother me because the jar itself still works perfectly fine but it might matter to some people. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4.0 out of 5 stars Love these little jars, but why are the lids so fragile? *by J***P on Reviewed in the United States on February 1, 2020* I love these little bottles so much that I've already ordered a second set. It's the perfect size for 1 container of the Hada Labo gel, so I decant that stuff into one of these and then I don't have to worry about dipping my fingers in the jar. Much more sanitary this way! I've also used 1 for some Cerave cream (even though it's thick, it does just fine) and some other night cream. Works like a charm.The weird part, though, is that the little clear lid on 2 of them have cracked. They haven't been dropped or used roughly, but they just developed a fracture line (not completely broken, just cracked). So weird! The second order I placed seems to have a little stronger of lids, so maybe it was just a weird weakness of the first batch that I got.Besides the lid issue, the only thing I can think of that would improve this would be if it was clear so that I could see how much product is left in it.
