The subject in the photo was a participant in a Bremerton, WA study conducted by a dental office equipped with an "endoscope". An endoscope is a specialized tool wherein a wand with a tiny camera on the end can be inserted into the gum line to look for tartar in dental pockets. There are only a few dental offices in the US that have them and they are difficult to use. The photo was taken by their Hygienist with a standard camera set up for oral photography. No one saw the hair until the pictures were processed a month or two later. Really too late to do anything about. We have a strict policy about not editing research results, so the hair stayed.
