Anthology of Boogie Woogie Piano

Not exactly what I was looking for, love instrumentals, but not many of the vocals that go along with them.

Various Artists. The Anthology Of Boogie Woogie Piano.This is a collectors' album. There, I've said the code words indicating that the album has issues. This 2 CD set of Ragtime and Boogie Woogie songs were recorded back in the 1920's, 1930's, and 1940's, before mastertapes and the words "high fidelity" were even invented, so you have to put up with the sometimes scratchy sound and low fidelity. It's time to put your tone controls or graphic equalizer to work and experiment to find the best settings to make the music more presentable. Put a note listing the best settings inside the CD case for future reference. These recordings are so old and out of print that you won't find them anywhere else, but they show the feelings and intensity of the oldtime performers trying to scratch out a living doing what they do best. Could the sound quality on the album have been better? Who knows. It is what it is. Let's all be grateful that these original recordings are still available.

...of it. This is two CDs full of boogie woogie piano playing by some of the greats. It unfortunately sounds like they were all playing the same piano in the same room at the same volume. With no one else around. I gave it four stars since there were a lot of songs which I could interlace with other music in a playlist. I would never put this CD on and listen to both CDs because it would all blend together in one endless stream of piano variations. Not sure where they got these from since it lacks any other instruments? There all solo piano pieces. Very odd.

You might wonder how I rated this CD in the five star class and my answer is that this 2 cd box set doesn't hit you in the ear the way a CD of music minted this very year might. But once you get down to listening to this set it grabs you big time: You will listen to it on your own terms. This is older music of the early great players with the best sound that era could do. Give it a chance to work on you and you'll want it. The first cut wasn't its strongest piece, so allow the rest get you get you in gear.

This collection documents the rise of boogie woogie from 1925 to 1944 combing both instrumental and vocal forms. Thare are the giants of boogie woogie like ALBERT AMMONS, PETE JOHNSON, JIMMY YANCEY AND MEADE LUX LEWIS, along with some lesser known artists such as COW COW DAVENPORT and MONTANA TAYLOR. At 40 selections over 2 cds this is a bargain at the price. Fans of this music will find this cd indispensible.John Walsh

Product arrived in perfect condition. Case was not broken.

This is an amazingly good album. Some of the pieces are played like I have never heard them played before. I'm not saying that I;m crazy about all of them, but most are fantastic. The one number, 'This Boogie Rocks', is probably worth the price of the album.

Des titres sélectionnés des twenties aux forties, et interprétés par de grands noms du genre : cela ne peut pas être mauvais. Effectivement, ces messieurs jouent bien, parfois de façon assez éblouissante. Mais n'espérez guère de surprise , la plupart des morceaux reposent sur la même base : un cycle des trois accords traditionnels, une basse endiablée mais invariable, et un riff - brève phrase - répété pendant tout le cycle ; puis nouveau cycle des mêmes accords, avec la même basse et un autre riff - ou une variante du premier - . Les morceaux chantés, et la belle contribution de Lionel Hampton - qui ne fut pas que vibraphoniste, mais aussi pianiste et batteur - apportent un peu de variété. Le prix est intéressant pour un double CD (40 titres), et si vous êtes musicien à la recherche de plans, il y a de quoi piocher.
