Do you want fries with your hellfire? Being soundly thrashed by the hero Emilia, the Devil King and his general beat a hasty retreat to a parallel universe...only to land smack in the middle of bustling, modern-day Tokyo! Lacking the magic necessary to return home, the two are forced to assume human identities and live average human lives until they can find a better solution. And to make ends meet, Satan finds gainful employment at a nearby fast food joint! With his devilish mind set on working his way up the management food chain, what will become of his thirst for conquest?! Review: Never Though Working at McDonald's Could Lead to World Domination - A great story and opening into the series. As a long time fan of the anime I was extremely disappointed when the anime ended with only 12 ep and I was left hanging. However, after seeing the light novel finally getting license I instantly got the copy and started reading. Hataraku no Maou or The Devil is a Part-Timer is a rare story capable of blending in hilarious comedy and intense action with little shortcoming. Although many anime and light novels in the past have attempted the trope of Hero vs Maou, majority of them are cliche and are executed poorly with one dimensional characters usual with the hero gathering comrade as he powers up to slay the "evil" demon lord. This story takes it a step further and portrays the relationship of the hero and the demon lord after he is defeated and escape to the modern world we know of. The tale of the demon lord as he struggles to make a living in a one store apartment while trying to get a promotion at a fast food chain is probably the most brilliant plot line I could ever imagine. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys a unique story that mixes action, supernatural, comedy, with a slight touch of romance. The unconventional setting and reaction of the demon lord as he interacts with the hero makes for a great laugh. If your unfamiliar with the format of a light novel each Volume is fairly short with around 200-300 pages and usually 4-5 illustrations. So the series overall isn't a heavy read even for a person like myself who rarely reads books. Review: I first watched the anime series and enjoyed it so much that I bought the first light ... - First of all this review is for the light novel, which has a blue cover, not the manga, which has a red cover. There are very few pictures in this book and is more of your typical novel. I first watched the anime series and enjoyed it so much that I bought the first light novel. This book is very similar to the anime and follows along the same story line although it only covers about the first 6 or 7 episodes. This is a very enjoyable book and goes into what the characters are thinking and also their motivations are explained a bit more in depth. It is very simple to read and understand and is more of a fun book with a few deep parts mixed in. The plot may seem outrageous since it is in the title, but do not let that deter you. This is an enjoyable book. Also if you have read any other English translations out there for this series, they are not anywhere near as good as this translation. Nothing against the other people who have translated this previously, I know they work very hard and do these translations with little to no compensation, but the officially licensed translations I have come across are usually better in most instances. You may save money by reading the free translations, but as someone who has tried that I can say that this is better.

A very enjoyable start to a very enjoyable series.
First off, if you are buying this book and it has a blue cover, it is the light novel. If it has a red cover, it is the manga. Another way to tell the two apart (since it can be a royal pain in the butt on Amazon) is to look at the cover, and check if it says "Illustrated By". All light novels list the artist under "Illustrated by", as the books only contain limited spot illustrations. Now that all that is out of the way, lets get to the actual book. I really enjoyed the anime, and I thought I would give the original light novel a chance. If you have seen the anime, then you are already well versed in what happens in this book. The only real difference is added insight into the minds of several of the characters, plus a few extended moments with Emi's friend, Rika. Even though I was already pretty familiar with the plot, I seriously enjoyed this book. The writing is fast and fun, the plot moves, and the interesting and colorful characters keep you engaged. It is also interesting to see where both the anime and manga series started, and how closely they hold to the original text. While it may take a book or two to get past what the anime covered, I am for sure going to keep reading, as I found this book to be immensely enjoyable. I also enjoyed the little character "resume" forms, and the attractive color art presented in the beginning of the book. If you are a fan of The Devil is a Part-Timer in its anime form, then I highly recommend checking out the original source material. Very well written, and highly entertaining.

Hilarious Comedy In The Typical High Quality Yen On Way
Devil is a Part Timer is a pretty hilarious light novel that is in the same typical high end quality as other Yen On light novels. The translator, Kevin G, who I dont have as doing other Yen On Light novels that Ive read is great. The volume reads nicely with no typos. Fake names of brands and places are translated well too conveying excellent similarities to what they are attempting to be real life knock offs of. Everything else reads great too with conversation flowing well and with terms like modern people do speak in the real world. It was a blast to read and one that was wonderful. In terms of extra content, Yen On gave the character files at the start of the book a translation as well as being in color, while the end of the book extras are the character files (without the characters covering over a large portion of them) translated like resumes. There is afterward provided which is witty. In terms of content, there are a few minor scenes included that werent animated, while the end of the book some scenes are done in much more detail to make them flow better together that the anime didnt (for example the post climax moment telling how and what was discussed in detail at Maou's place). Though for those familiar with the anime it was still fun to read as their interactions are kind of funny in the written format and not just on screen. The descriptions of expressions or whats running through their minds is nice. Devil Is A Part TImer is a great start to another light novel series being brought from Yen On and I cant wait for more volumes. It was really good.

Yes, I would like fries with my hellfire!
I'll keep my review brief as I'm quite biased when it comes to this series so I'm probably the most unsuitable person to be an unbiased reviewer. For those who aren't (or are) familiar with this series--whether you prefer to call it Hataraku Maou-sama!, The Devil is a Part-timer!, or Demon Lord at Work!--there are four different versions of it: the anime, light novel, manga, and manga spin-off (Hataraku Maou-sama! High School!). This is the LIGHT NOVEL. Out of the three book versions of this series the novel and the manga always seem to get confused with one another but it's rather simple: - Wagahara + 029 (Oniku) = novel - Wagahara + Akio Hiiragi = manga Oniku generally handles character design and novel illustrations but she does not illustrate the manga. Akio only illustrates the manga. Now with that bit of explanation out of the way, I can attempt to express how much I adore this series. Genre-wise I always tend to favor horrors and thrillers of the like, followed by light hearted series and dumb comedies. A series about Satan coming to Japan and having to work minimum wage at MgRonalds to support his demonic househusband while the daughter of an angel is trying to murder him? Sounds iffy but we'll try it. I never thought that simple thought would turn into my favorite series of all time. I can't express how ecstatic I was back when Yen Press first announced they were going to be translating and publishing all versions. As a lot of people I heard of the novel via watching the anime when it first aired, and for anyone who is thinking of purchasing this novel because of it you'll basically just be given a review on what the anime had covered as it pretty much follows novels #1 & #2 fully. Because of that I won't go into detail about what the basic plot was for this novel in particular. The translation can be a bit iffy in places, especially in the first couple of books, but otherwise I love how well written and translated it is. I didn't know what to expect from the English version of the novel either but my biggest hope was that they would keep the color fold out illustrations at the front of every novel, and I must say I was so happy when I saw they kept them as well as translated them as well. The same goes for the character files & bonus content in the back; they even included Wagahara's "notes from the author" page. Even with the few minor hiccups in translation I could never say enough positive things about this series. If you like an easy comedy that can turn to a drama, filled with memorable characters, cute illustrations, and a capticaptivating writing style then please give it a chance. Highly recommended.

This is a fun story in which the devil (from the world of ...
This is a fun story in which the devil (from the world of Ente Isla) must work a part-time job in Japan. The story centers around conflicts between the devil, the hero, noble or less-than-noble groups from the other world, and the very-much-our-world struggle to pay bills. To me, the charm of this story is its light-hearted and comedic nature, though it certainly has its darker, more serious moments. After all, the main character is the merciless and cruel leader of the demon world. What could he know about what it means to be a human? What could he know of the pain the hero and her companions have suffered? The book is written and translated well enough. It's no century-defining work, but it is my favorite Japanese light novel to date and one of my personal favorite stories. I would not consider it a "must read" by any means but it is quite enjoyable. 9/10 I first watched the anime, which honestly gave me a stronger sense of what the characters' personalities are like than I would have gotten from this book alone. Do note that the anime (at least, at this time) does not cover the entire written story.

Six Stars!
This is a great story about a not so devilish ruler, Sadao Maou, of a magical realm, Ente Isla, who must abandon his home to live to fight another day. Through a portal he and his loyal general, Alciel, end up in our world. To survive, they assume human identities, which uses up the little magic travel though portal left him. With no immediate way to renew their magic, Sadao gets a job as a part-time fast food worker at MgRonalds. Adapting to their home as well as attacks from others who travel from Ente Isla with their own agendas leads to many humorous situations. I laughed all the time while reading this, I can hardly wait for the next book! There are differences between the anime and this manga, mostly just better explanations of character motives.

Good story quality--Bad shipping quality
Alright. First, I'll give you the differences between the manga, and the light novel: Light novel: Has a blue color theme. Manga: Has a red color theme. Next, I'll give you a rundown of the story. Satan, after a huge battle in the world of Ente Isla, against the hero Emilia, retreats through a portal, and lands in the middle of Tokyo with his trusted ally Alciel. The two then learn info about their current situation, the Japanese language, and so on. They get an apartment from a landlady(who--as it says in the novel "looks like a giant, purple potato that was peeled in random areas,") and they begin their normal life. Soon after, though Satan(now going by Maou), encounters a strange girl on the sidewalk, and lends her his umbrella. The girl turns out to be the hero, Emillia, who had chased down Satan and Alciel, following them into Japan! However, things aren't completely peachy, as a mysterious person soon begins attacking them! Can the two work together long enough to protect Japan--even more so--their lives?! ART: 10/10 The art is extremely good In the cover art, and the illustrations throughout the novel. WRITING: 10/10 I haven't stumbled across any weird wordings, or anything. QUALITY: 8/10 The shipping quality was okay, but not the best. There were tears along the cover, and both covers were bent. OVERALL: 4/5 STARS Everything was good, except for the shipping quality. I definitely recommend it, if you are a fan of the anime, as this is the source material. Everything from the anime and manga, was born from this novel.

Buona lettura
Ho acquistato questa light novel in inglese perchè in italia non arriverà mai, ha la copertina in cartone senza sovracopertina , lo consiglio a tutti coloro che vogliano leggere light novel nonostante la carenza di queste in Italia.

Fun and all-round Enjoyable Read. Well translated Light Novel - Recommend to fans.
If you are looking for a well written adaptation of a comedy Anime about fantasy meets modern part-time jobs, this is a good read. It explores the story in the viewpoint of the main 'villain' known as the Devil King Satan or his other name 'Sadao Maou' as they struggle adjusting to urban living. The writing had been rewritten for western readers and it explains in better depth than the animation. Or you can purchase and read it as a fun novel. The book comes with crisp colorful illustration on the front. Whether you are a fan of the series or not, you will identify with the topics they touch upon and laugh at the demon guy's confusion and quirky enthusiasm. This version of 'Devil is a Part-timer' is a written novel and not as many artwork as you find in a manga but explains in better depth. Words describes more than illustrations in my reading experience.

Manik Nava
Super funny and addictive. I would really recommend to everyone, although only three volumes are available at the time, so one could be hooked without being able to finish reading the story...
