These counterfeits are showing up on Ebay and even large bullion dealers. The magnetic slide detects fake silver through an 'intrinsic property' known as diamagnetism. This produces an effect called the Eddy Current Brake. This test is to be used as a tool along with other methods such as weight and dimension tests. Silver plated copper also has some diamagnetic properties and can be confused for silver with this test. The silver plated coins do visually slide faster than pure silver coins. You can also visually test side by side copper pennies vs. zinc pennies, the zinc slides faster. Magnetic Surface Measures 2" wide by 7" tall.
