Gear Multi-Plier 600 - Blunt Nose Multitool, 14-in-1, Black

Best tool in the toolbox, lightweight, sharp, durable, & with multiple tools!

This item replaced my worn out Gerber tool from 1999 (same model). It has all the same tools, and they improved the wire cutter on this generation. Quality looks and feels great just like my old one. The durable sheath has thick material and double stitching. I was initially concerned about the quality when ordering, since so many things are cheaply made now. So far, I am very happy with the quality.

This has been my EDC multi-tool for almost a year, and it's still like new. I haven't been gentle and it's held up well. I used the needle nose pliers last night to pry open the sliding glass window in the back window of my old pickup truck. Given the direction and magnitude of the torque applied to the plier hinge, this was really abuse rather than use, but good tools like this are overbuilt and use quality materials and heat treating, so they can take some occasional abuse. I love the assortment of tools on board. Gerber seemed to know how I'd use this multi-tool. I carry a full sized knife that's easier to access, so I almost never use the knife on the Gerber Multi-Plier, but a multi-tool needs a knife and this is a good blade that's well designed. It's small enough to be discrete, large enough to be genuinely useful, and the smooth and serrated areas seem ideal for a multitude of different uses. The replaceable jig saw blade is genius! I love that I can carry lightweight, inexpensive, and readily available blades optimized for cutting wood, soft metals and harder metals. The abrasive grit blade that is supplied is the best of all worlds. It may not be optimal for the materials I just mentioned, but it will cut almost ANYTHING, including glass or ceramic tile. I also love the way the Phillips screwdriver bit accepts the included adapter that can use any 1/4" hex drive bit. That opens this tool up to using all sorts of tool bits. You can carry an assortment of security bits and McGyver your way into all sorts of tamper proof electronics. Or you can get a 1/4" square drive adapter and carry a selection of small sockets. The small set of bits that ships with the Pro Scout is a good selection for everyday needs and tucks next to the multi-tool in my tactical pants' small cell phone pocket that wasn't used since I switched to a ginormous tablet phone. I'm usually a SOG guy, but Gerber nailed this one.

My son absolutely loves this tool! He uses it a lot during fishing to cut line, remove a fish from the hook, and many other items.

Hmm, where to begin. This is a reasonably good multi-tool, but I just don't like it. I own at least a dozen different ones and although these are good quality, I just don't find myself wanting to grab them when I'm on the go. The single best feature is that they lack a blade which means they should be TSA compliant, but you can be guaranteed that they will pull you aside and inspect them. And even though they don't have a blade, an over eager TSA agent may still confiscate them. Now, my specific complaints with the tool. The pliers have to be slid out. This is different than usual of flipping the handles over. The nice part is that it makes for slightly more comfortable handles, but the bad part is that the pliers don't seem as stable as other tools. The saw is a great feature but the replaceable blade isn't attached nearly as well as some of my other tools. And it faces the wrong way in my opinion. My Leatherman Surge allows the blade to be turned to face either direction plus it holds the blade more securely. Due to the way the pliera slide out, it also makes all the tools a bit more difficult to access. You have to pull them out from between the handles since they don't flip around. Look at the picture and it shows the tools slightly open. That's basically the position of the handles when you need access to any of them and it just isn't great. It rules out any chance of one handed operation also. One final complaint is that it comes with a small torx wrench. The sheath has a small loop that appears like it was made for this wrench, but it is just awkward. It interferes with inserting/removing the multi-tool. A different position would have been so much better. I should probably give it 3 stars, but admittedly some of my complaints are more subjective. It is built well and it holds up to a lot. If you need a tool then this is certainly better than nothing, but if you only have one tool (and especially if you don't need TSA compliant device) then you can do better.

I've been a big fan of the MP600's platform, and this model is no exception to my feelings. Liking that although is marketed as a needle-nose, it is not as thin/"pointed" as the regular (non removable, casted in cutter) head kind of an in-between blunt and needle nose heads. Having read about the "exploding" cutters, I've found that I can use the cutters to "notch in" the hard wire and then bend with the pliers to cut it; has work really well for at least my last 25 cuts (garden work; bicycle jobs). One feature I like of the design versus Leatherman's, is that if the cutters "chew and bend" a wire, I'm still able to pull apart the handles and free the wire ( with my Waves, Revs, and PSTII I'll need a tool to separate the pliers jaws as the handle would buckle; and yes, plural!). There are still a great variety of u shank for the exchanger, and I carry a couple within the tool's sheath mostly for metal and wood, with varying lengths. The scissors have been great also, and are relatively comfortable to use. And, since I complemented it with the Leatherman Removable Bit Driver Kit (fits perfectly) and my homemade awl bit, I have the perfect set to tackle any errands at work (both are no-knife-policy environments: school based, and outpatient clinic; I'm an occupational therapist). A very solid tool! 2-month review After two months of almost daily use, I've managed to chip one of the cutters; as I tried to remove a finishing nail, the pliers twisted and closed, and the distal end of the cutters (the one closer to the bolt/nut jaws) hit each other with the aforementioned result. Still a 5-star for the tool, as it works as it should. Ordered a replacement cutters set, as I can only guess when the chipped cutter will finally breaks. Hope someone would sell replacement cutters out of tool steel or even stainless steel like the Leatherman's, which would still work even if nicked and easily fixed to working condition with a file ( not to mention that it'll be three-sided!).

This is my first Gerber multitool and I love it, so much so I picked up a MP400 as well. I’m an IT guy and I used to carry a tool pouch on my belt to carry my tools. I hated the weight and it didn’t look right with my attire. I wanted to reduce the weight so the hunt was on for a multitool to replace my tool pouch. I choose the Gerber Pro Scout mainly because of the Fiskars scissors and the accessory kit. I’ve used the Pro Scout for about a month now and love it. I use most of the tools every day. The only tools I don’t really use are the file, can opener, and the saw. Pros: 1) Quick deploy pliers. I can easily deploy them with one hand. The plies are quite strong as I haven’t damaged the plies yet and I use them a lot. I tested the wire cutter by cutting a fairly thick cloths hanger and I was able to cut it with ease. I can’t say the same for my Leatherman Rev. 2) Fiskars scissors. They are awesome!! I can cut thick zip ties with no problem. I use them to cut my labels all the time as well. 3) Accessory kit. I used from time to time and have not had any issues with them. It sure beats having to walk back to the office when I have the bits with me. 4) Knife is fairly sharp. 5) All the tools lock. 6) Sheath is made in USA (at least that’s what mine said) and hold both the tool and the accessory kit. Cons: 1) If you pull the handle apart while the pliers are in the lock position, the clip that keeps the pliers will pop off. It could also cause the pliers to bind when you try to deploy the pliers. 2) Knife could have been longer. There’s extra room for a longer knife. It’s sad the knife is the exact same knife as the one included on the MP400. 3) Knife nail nick/slot is on the wrong side. It makes it a litter harder to deploy the knife. The MP400 has the same issue (since it’s the same knife). 4) No nail nick/slot on the can opener. The Gerber Pro Scout isn’t perfect but it fit my needs and I love it. I've uploaded some pictures to show the size difference of the tool. The left black tool is the Gerber MP400, the middle is the Leatherman Rev, and the right is the Gerber MP600 Pro Scout. The last picture shows shows the missing nail nick/slot on the knife. The Fiskars scissors has it on the correct side, come on Gerber fix that issue.

I had a Gerber multi tool before until my tools were stolen so I purchase a new one and it's better than the other one I had. So I would recommend it to anyone.

Ottimo acquisto.

As a Handy man, you've got to have one of these- The quality is there, plus its one of those slim type multitool to have.
