No, they don’t leave any blobs of ink. They are extremely fine-point pens which allow you to write in very small print without blotches. I’ve used these pens in my Bible study for many years and they do not blotch nor do they bleed through even the thinnest pages and because of the very fine point, I can cram a lot of notes in my margins. I won’t write in my Bible with any other pen because I’ve had disaster blotching and bleed-throughs with other pens. This is my go-to pen. Also, I have a left-handed relative who loves these pens because the ink doesn’t smear as happens with many pens, especially with left-handed writing. If you’re looking for a very fine point pen that doesn’t blotch, smear, or bleed through, you’ll love this pen and it comes in a variety of colors.

Will this pen smear on a slick surface, like say a calendar or a receipt?

I have never had any problems with this pen smearing on anything but bear in mind the paper in all calendars and receipts are not created equal so what applies to one may not apply to another. I would say you are safe though. For the price of one pen you can't go wrong with trying it before buying a larger quantity if you are skeptical. I love this pen because it writes smooth and it fits my hand and it doesn't cause my hand to cramp and long use.

whats the difference, advantage of this over the oldie but goodie EasyTouch retractable please?

Thinner. Fits in my pocket better. Ergonomically, the "easy touch" has a padded barrel at the finger grip where the "better" is hard plastic the entire length.
