Herco Wood Clarinet Maintenance Kit

I was looking for a product that had everything I needed to keep up my clarinet as I just bought a really nice used one. A Selmer Soloist with Silver Plated Keys and made of Grenadilla Wood. I looked all over and then came to Amazon where I can find everything and you guessed it I found the Herco Wood Clarinet Maintenance Kit because of a great review by "Wendy". There is also a similar kit made by Yamaha. I did not purchase this one because I did not see it at the time so I would be wrong if I did not tell you of another name so you can make the best decision. There is so much inside to get you started and if you are a professional the cost is so cheap it is a great buy. Everything from cork grease to a cleaning cloth and everything else in between. Take a look at my video review for a breakdown of everything and I show you each item in the package. Also, there is a nice information pamphlet inside that explains what to clean, and when to clean, and how often each type of upkeep is due. Great kit with all the essentials to maintain our son's clarinet. The booklet explaining how to properly clean and care for the instrument was especially appreciated. This kit was more comprehensive and less expensive than the ones sold at the local music store where we used to rent band instruments for school use. I would strongly recommend!

First: The substance infused into the polishing has a strong, overwhelming smell of petroleum product; probably an oil and wax combo. This odor permeated everything in this kit. I chucked the printed instructions, the cardboard that sealed the bag, the bag it’s all packaged in to get rid of the smell. Still, the polishing cloth does a nice job. You just have to deal with the smell. I recommend using it outside, or in your garage—any place you won’t be spending time in for awhile after you finish. Second: Missing is any instruction about putting something between the pads on the closed holes, and the holes in the tubes to keep the bore oil from getting on the pads. If oil gets on the pads, over a short time, the pads will not give a proper seal. I use small pieces of aluminum foil for this. Oiling is recommended once a year. I do it every three to six months, as I feel this gives better results in keeping the instrument safer from the moisture we create during playing. Pros: **Everything you’ll need for maintaining a wood clarinet is in this kit. **The two, good-size jars of oil, one bore oil, one key oil will keep you supplied for a long time. **The stinky polishing cloth I mentioned earlier produces a nice, shiny finish. **The swab for applying the bore oil is well made and dense, and reaches well into the bore. **Brushes for cleaning the mouthpiece, and the hinges that work the keys are well made. **Kit is made in the USA, so instructions are well written and clear. Cons: **Did I mention the smell? Yep, did. **The thumb pads are just circular pieces of cheap, not very dense foam. As thumb pads, they’ll be mostly useless. **Instruction as to exactly how much bore oil to use is vague. They say put a few drops on the long swab. I recommend running a thin line of bore oil the length of the swab pad, on both sides. For good coverage, rotate the swab the entire time you’re inside the bore, both going in and withdrawing. Recommend? Yes, I recommend this kit. I also restate, use it outside or in your garage/shop where the smell can dissipate. Do use a good light, or small flashlight (torch for you from across the pond), to look through the bore and be cure it has been oiled thoroughly (not heavily). Do store it all in an airtight container or bag so the smell of the polishing cloth stays contained. If used properly, you’ll get great results from this kit.

I knew it was for clarinet, but I needed to treat my clarinets and an oboe. The upper bore is too small for the size of the cloth that is included in this set. The set is great, just make sure to get the right thing for your instrument.

Great price for what you get. The silk for drying the inside of the instrument is lightweight, and while there are better ones available, this one gets the job done just fine.

If you have a wood clarinet and want to keep its top condition, you need to have this maintenance kit. It has everything you needed to clean your mouthpiece, oil the inside of the clarinet, oil the key joints, clean up those hard reach areas on your clarinet, and make the key shine. The polishing cloth does have a strong chemical smell, but so far it didn't bother my son at all after I polished the keys with this cloth. The swap, cork, thumb rest cushion and ID tag are just low hanging fruits in this package.

I just picked up my clarinet again after nearly 20 years. I got it refurbished and immediately purchased this set to help me keep it beautiful. It has everything you need for daily maintenance. Everything is good quality. This is a good kit, I recommend it.

Everything is good . Maintenance for the Clary assisted greatly. I scratched my head though with the little round foam pieces. They are meant to he thumb rests. C'mon guys . Not a proper thing. Ditch that and develop a better fix. Cheers
