The foam itself is extremly firm and should serve the purpose of person protection during an accident. Pushing as hard as you can with a finger, the foam will barely give at all. This stuff is designed to reduce the risk of broken bones in an accident, not provide "comfort". It is labeled SFI 45.1 USI. The outside "box" shaped dimensions are close to 1.25" x 1.75" x 36". The cutout for the bar is about 0.5" deep and 1.5" across. At the thickest point, the foam is about 0.75" thick. It's not strong enough to apply on it's own and needs to be zip tied. Since this is the case it would have been nice for them to include channels in the design to make the zip tie flush in case of a pad cover or sleeve.
