After his disastrous American adventures, Paul West is back in France, and this time he’ll be kicking up merde all along the Cote d’Azur. Hooking up with an English girl nicknamed M that he met in Vegas, it’s a peaceful working holiday—at first. Suddenly, M becomes secretive, going off to meetings and overreacting to questions about her whereabouts. Then, a bombshell. While M is at one of her meetings, Paul is told that she is not who she seems to be. That she is involved in a plot so sinister that she and Paul’s every move has been watched since they arrived. And if Paul doesn’t agree to stick with M and find out who she’s working for, then he’s going to prison for a long, long time as an accomplice. Suddenly the Cote d’Azur doesn’t feel quite so sunny… Review: Fun easy read - One of the few "funny" books I've ever read that was funny. The characters involved may be a little flat and the plot non-complex but it is very entertaining and an easy read. Would probably be a good beach novel or a lazy weekend read. Review: Enjoyed, Murder with comic relief! - I would buy more from this author. A serious subject with some comic relief. The characters were believable people you would like if you met them socially. "I'm a person of few words and insisting that I write 20 words makes my comments insipid."

cute title but story goes wanting...
Dial M for Merde is a cute title, and the novel has an excellent start in Paris. The author has clearly traveled to The City of Lights [and southern France] and has tried to ride a rental bike in city traffic! But the story decays from there on, as the reader searches for both the merde and the murder. I'm 25% of the way into the book and the main even hasn't happened yet. I'll give it another chance, but i will be skimming in search of the title event. The writing is OK, and if this is a new writer i think there is hope for turning up a notch to the 'good level'. There needs to be more focus on the plot, right now the reader is chasing sub-plots, while the core issue goes wanting. As a reader I also need to care about the characters, and I don't care enough about them at this point -- hoping that will improve too. More later ...

This was a GREAT read, so amusing and informative as well. Love the honest but kind portrayal of the French.

Interesting...
WARNING: "May contain spoilers"... This book was being promoted by Amazon via their Kindle store. The premise looked interesting, so I gave it a shot. Overall, I liked it. The lead character starts out clearly thinking he's going to do one thing and ends up in a mess of different situations, few of them good. The story comes together nicely at the end, and multiple disasters are averted. The general plot has been done many times before, though I always found the presentation more than interesting enough to keep reading. My only gripe? It seemed like every other thing that happened in the story was of a sexual nature. I don't really care, though I was tired of having such scenes and concepts appear over and over again.

Mildly enjoyable
First book in the Merde series that I have read. I enjoyed the humor and sarcasm. Not much of a story but the characters were fun. For a light read that will often make you laugh I recommend it. I will give the other books by Stephen Clark a try.

Fun read for people who love France
Just plain fun to read and a wink at French society. I recommend this book as a diversion from what merde is going on now.

Any one for Brexit ??
Pathetic British attempt to diss the " Frogs " If you find that Coupe de grace = lawnmower funny as a " translation "; then you are too sophisticated to appreciate this Jeremy Clarkson level rubbish

Well worth it
Much better than the 3rd instalment, same brand of witty sarcasm throughout and quite similar in format but a great continuation of likeable characters in a new quagmire of merde. Thoroughly enjoyed it and have the 5th to read now!
