When getting this, I expected something that wouldn't last long, was moderately involving, just something to wile away a few hours. Got a bit more for my money than expected.There's a lot of levels. A lot. Many realms, looking different, with varied mobs to shoot, nuke or beat down on.The level design is rather well done. With concealed walls, switches, doors requiring keys, teleporters, and all that regular gumph. I didn't expect the Z-axis to play such a part, with levels incorporating walkways and stairs that lead one up, down and around all over the place.The range of characters quite staggered me. The originals are all in attendance, but joined by a few new ones of archetypal worth (knight, sorceress, jester). Later on that array is expanded upon as you have the opportunity to unlock variants of all those by completing a treasure room challenge. For example, the first one has you run around collecting coins which results in unlocking the Medusa character, mechanically slightly superior to the Sorceress but is really just a different graphical option.There's myriad power-ups around the levels. These are also available to be purchased between levels. Not a worthwhile purchase to start most levels as they're temporary buffs, but when going into a boss levels they can make the difference.You can also spend your hard earned coin on enhancing character stats, dragging up the lower stats of each archetype so by the end of the game all could be capped.Especially if you return to certain levels to reacquire the artefact designed to help with a boss, and kill them over again for the massive coin reward.I've completed the game with the Minotaur. Yet the game shan't be consigned to obliviion. After a foray into other games I'll return and do it over with a different character. And that time around, I might have better luck in the treasure rooms. I left it with so many characters unlocked the completist in me is challenged.
