Why is the transfer rate so slow? usb 3.0 is 5 gigabits per second and usb 3.1 is 10 gigabits per second. the listed 240 mb/s is slower than usb 2.0

This drive is not slow at all - you have your megabits and megabytes confused. USB 2.0 has a max speed of 480mbps, which is 60MB/s, while USB 3.0 can push 640MB/s and this drive is 240MB/s, which is excellent for a single HDD (non-SSD, non-RAID) as most similar drives work in the 180-220MB/s range. Also please keep in mind that with any hard drive, the drive itself is usually the limiting factor in transfer speed. Meaning any single drive is typically not capable of reading/writing data at anywhere near the published max speed that the interface is "capable" of. You have to get into an SSD or multi-drive RAID setup to start really utilizing what today's faster interfaces like USB 3.0 and 3.1 are capable of.

Can you hear the fan when it's running or only when its doing a lot of work?

I do not hear a fan, but this drive is loud. Whenever it is doing something if it is on your desktop, you will hear it. It is actually loud enough it is becoming a serious distraction, and I only use the drive for Time Machine backups. If it were a drive you were accessing all the time and it was right near you, I would not be able to handle the noise. I have another LaCie 5TB drive (USB powered, no external plug) and that one is essentially silent. Why is this one so loud?

Can this be used with a 2014 iMac 27" 5K ?
