Are they geniune wrangler because the stitching on the back pocket is a straight line and not the W

Yes they are. I lived stateside for over two decades and bought them there. The Wranger company is no longer, it's been little more than a brand of clothing owned by a bigger company since the late 90's. The current owner of "Wranger" also owns Lee branded jeans. The 'W' pockets are marketed and meant for line/country dancing and horse riding. The Authentics 'line pocket' jeans are meant for "business casual" or everyday wear, and sold by stores such as Target (UK equiv. = Tesco). I've owned more than a dozen "authentics" over the past 3 decades - they're typically manufactured in South America of US made cotton fabric.

I would assume that the 'carbon' jeans should be black in colour, and the 'dark denim' indigo blue, (and not vice versa as per the illustrations)?

I bought both types of jeans and you are right in your assumptions.
