If there's a sticker on the ssd (eg. samsung ssds) should it be removed prior to attaching the thermal pad or should the heat sink just be put on top?

The sticker itself should NOT be removed, it has a metal heatsink layer embedded within it, and will form part of any enclosures heatsink. This is why sticker removal invalidates your warranties - it is bonded to the chips on the SSD.

This is for a M.2 NVME SSD it will not work on other types of SSD formats. Check your drive to see if there are any letters with it.
