Does it have a built-in strainer?

Yes it does. Like a classic cocktail shaker, the top is a strainer. This shaker set is the best!!!

The bottom of the shaker says "made in China"

It is not insulated. However, it is an excellent cocktail shaker set.

Why does it leak so bad?

I have had zero issues with it leaking. make sure the shaker is not overfilled as this might cause a pressure issue while shaking. do not put carbonated liquids in the shaker as it will explode. make sure all parts are clean and securely tightened. If you find that it is difficult, try wrapping a towel around the cap to give you more leverage while tightening.
