I don't have a vast experience of bike repair, but in the few years that I have been honing my skills, I realized I need a bike chain keeper because it's cheap and handling a loose chain is very annoying. Most others I saw did not have a 'actual' gear to grip the chain. I like this design because of personal preference but it allows a more realistic pedaling motion if I work on the rear derailleur or chain. In general, any chain keeper will help protect your frame from a loose chain rubbing, so a win-win.
