Good supplement
I bought this for my grandson to help boost his reading skills, especially reading comprehension. So far he likes doing the worksheets. As part of his after school routine, he can choose from different enrichment activities and he is selecting one of the worksheets about three of the five days. Since he has not finished the workbook, it is too early to tell how much it actually improves his reading, but he does not seem so reluctant to read his storybooks on his own now. He is also more willing to try to figure out new words before asking for help.Would definitely recommend this as supplemental material for early readers. It would also be useful for more confident readers to reinforce their reading skills. The material is appropriate for the stated grade level, so if your child is reading above grade level, you might want to consider a more advanced workbook.

Excellent teaching asset.
I am a volunteer tutor in a publc school for several children on different days of the week. . I bought this book to help the first graders read and understand written words, sounds and picture images. The exercises are fun for the child to learn from, and being fun, makes the child want to do more word and sentence exercises. I actually inserted each page in a page protector, and the child writes with a whiteboard erasable marker, so a clean page is ready for the next child, and the book can be used by many children. The authors understand that presenting learning to read in a fun way will attract the child into learning more.

Great Learning Tool.
My daughter was having trouble with reading in 1st grade. Her teacher said she was behind the other students. I could tell something just wasn't clicking with her and the words she was trying to read. She wasn't sounding out the words first and just trying to guess. This work book helped her to practice sounding out and figuring out the words to build a solid foundation to reading. I had her do 2 pages in this book and in http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0307479323/ref=cm_cr_ryp_prd_ttl_sol_24 (Sylvan's First Grade Success with Sight Words) each night, only assisting occasionally, not giving her the answer. She went from a C to a B the next marking period and then to an A on the third marking period. Now she's reading like a champ.

helping my son improve
I bought this workbook for my son who is in 1st grade. He is A.D.D. and is struggling a little bit. This book has already helped him imrpove and he is even having fun learning. I call it homework, but he calls it fun work. Now what kid calls homework fun work unless it is fun!? We have only had this book for 5 days!!! He does about 6-14 pages a night. And I have him write the answers in a separate notebook so we can re use the workbook to see how much he has learned from the start of it. I highly recommend this workbook and have another one for math that we havent tried yet. But it is something to get for your child whether they are struggling or if you just want to spend time together with them having fun learning. LOVE THIS!

Great buy
I purchased this book for my son in first grade and he loves it. I wasn't sure how excited he would be that I purchased him extra work to do at home, but he calls this "fun work" and asks all the time to work on this notebook. Great purchase for us. Helps him stay excited about learning and I get to experience it with him. I would say the challenges are right in line with what I would expect. Not too easy for where he is at in school and not too challenging where he wouldn't want to work on it.

Fun; Builds reading skills quickly
I'm an unschooling homeschool mom, so we don't do much in terms of workbooks or curriculum, but my daughter (7) has a passion for workbooks while we're on roadtrips, etc., so I pick them up from time to time. The Sylvan workbooks were a really big hit with her. They're colorful and fun, and do a great job of building from one section to the next. Her reading had definitely improved by the time she finished this (it took her about a month to get through it), and she's now started on the Sylvan 2nd Grade Reading workbook as well as the Vocabulary book.

great product
im always nervous buying activity books for my kids, but this is great. keeps my son engaged and he feels super confident in his reading. sometime when the school sends home homework, my son has already done similar work in his work book and then feels very confident instead of frustrated as he has been in the past.

Great book! My son loves it!
My 6 year old has been struggling with reading and I have had a very hard time getting him to work on it with me. But he loves this book! All the lessons are presented in a fun way. He actually enjoys working out of this book and will occasionally pick it up on his own. This book has been very helpful and I plan to get more Sylvan books in the future.
