How much clearance is needed?** A: The handle lays flat to the floor. I measured and you would need 6 inches of clearance. This is so the body of the vacuum can have clearance and not the handle. I have been very pleased with mine. It is easy to maneuver and is light weight enough that it does not cause me to be in pain later after using it. I have not been able to use a heavier vacuum because of the pain I would suffer later. With Fibromyalgia I have to be careful of what I do or use. Keep in mind that this is a light weight vacuum and the motor is not as strong as a regular vacuum. This is great for quick clean ups. It can be used for heavier cleaning, but it will take several passes with this vacuum to get the area as clean as a larger vacuum would do. I hope this answers your question. It will lay flat enough to vacuum under your bed. **Q: Does this vacuum have a powered beater bar. The brush roll description is not clear.** A: No it definitely is NOT powered. It is very clear in the manual that it spins when there is air flow, so I turned it upside down and verified that it is a free spinning brush and doe snot have a beater bar at all (a beater bar is a metal rod that pounds the carpet up and down its old fashioned and we have not been a beater bar in any product for over 30 years, what you probably meant to asl is not has a powered brush which it definitely does not. More expensive units have powered brushes which makes a gigantic difference, these low cost units are really only good for very light cleanups, light dust or very light dry dirt. Once there is too much hair that wraps around the roller (very easy to do if you have anyone in the household has any hair at all on their body. The roller also slows down due to age so after two years of light duty (we only use it once our twice a month because we have a large very powerful unit as well) so it has a short lifespan. It does have a think rubber strip that rubs against the carpet and acts like a carpet rake, this does help move the dust/dirt but does not help life the dirt into the container. We are surprised that after 2 years of extremely light duty the roller now doesn't spin despite toe much we carefully clean it. Yes, you have to clean it by hand every time you use it, which is definitely not desirable because it is intended for quick pickups so having to them clean it means that its not quick at all. **Q: Is this good for picking up (clumping type) kitty litter, off of tile floor, without spitting it out on the sides?** A: Hi....this should do great picking up litter on a tile floor or carpet. We have at least a half a foot clearance, so it worked great for that purpose. It did a nice job, as the rug was covered in dust, and it removed it all, even without having to go over it multiple times. It also coverts into a "dustbuster" for quick clean ups. And that is exactly what this is for: Quick clean ups or a small area, such as under the bed, Kitchen Floor, Area Rug. Even if you have a small apartment or small room, it is not going to perform well for those purposes. It will work, but you are going to be wasting more time because it is very small in size, plus I can see if you use it for long periods of time, that you will put a lot of wear on the motor. You can still get a nice vacuum for a small living space, that are under 75 dollars and will perform much better. (It wont be as light, but I have one that is under 12 pounds) I took off a star because even though it does the job, it isnt built well and if you have the vacuum handle all the way down, such as vacuuming under the bed, you have to pull back very slowly, as device that suck up the dirt, will start to pop up, due to its light weight. I also though that it was priced higher then other vacuums in its class, and I have had a few dirt devils over the years, and they arent exactly the best built vacuums, but I needed something that would fit under the bed and that had an agitator brush, and this one fit the bill.
