A: It's short for "REC 8".  The "REC" stands for "rectangular", the basic shape of the lens.  Both the "54" and the "8" have something to do with the size, but I'm not sure exactly what.

**Q: will these fit plastic frames?**
A: only if they are thin plastic frames, usually you would need a pair that are made for plastic frames

**Q: What are the dimensions of this item?**
A: I don't know the exact dimensions, but these clip ons are designed for the largest glasses available. I believe this size is mostly for men's glasses, which some of the other smaller clip ons don't cover.

These frames would not clamp onto the frames of my glasses. They did not stretch nicely. I wanted to get a refund but after the shipping and 15% restocking fee it was just cheaper for me to toss them in the trash which is exactly where they can be found..in the local landfill.

Very good for the price and appear to be of good quality. I liked that you can choose size and shape to fit. These are very close to my glasses fit and at a fraction of the cost compared to ordering with glasses.
