No need to buy a different needle. I just bought this turntable largely so I can rip a bunch of 78s to MP3, but before buying another needle like people are saying, I first tried it using the needle that comes with it. And it works just fine on 78s. I have some with good quality grooves, poor quality (scratched, warped, melted) and it works great on all. Of course sounds great on 45s and 33s also. **Q: About how loud is it? Can I hook this up to a bigger set of speakers if I needed to?** A: This turntable is set up to operate in a couple of ways. 1. You can hook it up to your computer via usb and play it through the pc/laptop while recording your vinyl onto another storage medium. 2. You can play your vinyl using the speakers on the machine. The speakers are ok, they are not bad for something small. 3. This item has the capacity to be plugged into your traditional home audio system using RCA cables. I admit it. I was from the cassette generation. And what did that do for us? First, it made music more portable. Remember walkmans? And it gave us options in the car when we didn't want to listen to the radio. But just like records, cassettes were delicate and easily damaged. But with cassettes we also slowly began to sacrifice the quality of sound itself. We made music convenient, but we didn't make it better, and that holds true with CD's and MP3's. Don't believe me? Then buy this record player!I didn't even know you could still buy "new" vinyl until I was shopping for a new CD the other day on Amazon and noticed a vinyl option. This got me to thinking about all those records I'd seen in antique and consignment stores over the years and passed right by. So, I typed in "record player" in Amazon and this one came up as the number one bestseller. I liked the price so I bought it! And on the day it arrived, I immediately hit up a few of those shops I mentioned and came home with a load of records that were super cheap.I won't repeat all the bells and whistles that everyone else has mentioned here and that you can read for yourself in the description. I will say that there's no assembly required. I had it out of the box and plugged in ready to play in under a minute. I do wish the needle moved back automatically after the record was done playing. The record does not spin until you move the needle over to it which is nice though. The volume is easy to adjust, and speaking of, the sound quality is amazing! You won't regret it! ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Good Value for the Money *by B***E on September 26, 2014* I bought this record player as a companion to an older wind up one I own, purely to play 33 1/3rpm LP records (although I do play my 45's on it now too when I don't fancy cranking up the gramophone), the real reason I chose the Jensen JTA-230 over most of the other low-budget turntables is because it's the only one I've yet seen that has a pitch/speed adjustment, which is important because some records out there have been recorded at slightly off speeds, which means sometimes you have to slow down or speed up the record to get it to sound right.So far as performance goes, it does pretty well what it says on the box, you can play LP's and 45's with it, although if you're going to want to play 78's on it it's best to buy another stylus that's specifically designed for doing so so you won't damage your record (hence why I've got the gramophone, it's set up to play 78's), and you can hook it up to your computer with the included USB cable and software to put your tunes on it in digital form, although I usually just use mine purely to play my records.It works splendidly, and the built-in speakers have a nice sound to them (it does have jacks on the back to hook up other speakers too) , although the volume doesn't get rattle-the-windows loud, it certainly can be plenty loud enough for personal listening and dancing with your sweetie if you're in the mood, it also features a headphone jack so you can easily groove to the music in private without disturbing anybody as well. Besides how well it works, I really like this turntable for how small it is, it's proportioned so that it can easily fit on a desk or a small table, and I think this bodes well for people who are in college, have a small house/apartment, or who like to go RVing. This does mean that with the LP's, the sides of the record poke out from the lid when you close it, but that's but a minor detail since this doesn't interfere with how the record plays at all.To sum up, if you're looking for a no-frills, more bang-for-your buck record player, it'd be worth your time and money to have a look at this one.
