Consider Mr. Brooks: a successful businessman; a generous philanthropist; a loving father and devoted husband. Seemingly, he's perfect. But Mr. Brooks has a secret - he is an insatiable serial killer, so lethally clever that no one has ever suspected him - until now. Earl Brooks is a man who has managed to keep his two incompatible worlds from intersecting by controlling his cunning, wicked alter ego Marshall. But now, as Mr. Brooks succumbs to one last murderous urge, an amateur photographer witnesses the crime. Suddenly Brooks finds himself entangled in the dark agenda of an opportunistic bystander, as well as hunted by the unorthodox and tenacious detective Tracy Atwood. Can Mr. Brooks outsmart his adversaries and conceal his shocking double life from his wife and daughter - or will someone expose his crimes and his identity once and for all? Review: An entertaining & disturbing movie that everyone should see to better understand how dangerous psychopaths are to our society. - I have seen Kevin Costner in numerous movies over the years and I have mixed feelings about many of the movies he has starred in; however, this movie (Mr. Brooks) he is perfect for the part. In this study of deviant behavior, Kevin plays Earl Brooks, who is a successful and respected businessman, who lives in a beautiful house and is married to a devoted wife and also has a college age daughter. He also has another secret life which is being an intelligent and cunning psychopath who loves killing people at various times. William Hurt plays his realistic alter ego who is always encouraging Brooks to kill again and again. When he is seen doing one of his murders by a photographer it becomes a cat and mouse game. There is another twist in this story when Brooks finds out his college aged daughter may also take after her father (Like father like daughter) when it comes to killing people. Demi Moore plays a determined detective who knows she is after a dangerous psychopath, but never seems to nail him. What makes this movie so unique is that it shows clearly why psychopaths are so dangerous in a society. They are ruthless and cunning people who have absolutely no conscience when it comes to meeting their personal warped needs. In conclusion, this is a movie that everyone, especially law enforcement officers, should see to better understand just how a psychopath's mind works and why they are so dangerous. Rating: 5 Stars. Joseph J. Truncale (Author: Predator Hunter: A warrior's memoir) Review: A complete departure for Mr. Costner. Brilliant and haunting. - Seeing Kevin Costner as a consummately evil psychotic killer was stunning! His evil self is personified by William Hurt who eggs him on like a gleefully wicked childlike invisible friend. The entire premise of the film puts us inside the mind of a mad man. It is a surprisingly seductive trip. The more I remember this movie, the more I like it.

Hey, Kevin Costner can act!!!!
There's a great clip in a "Family Guy" episode where the character Chris Griffen comes out of the Costner movie, "No Way Out" and yowls, "How does Kevin Costner keep getting work????". That pretty much sums up what I have always thought about Kevin's pinball-like quality of his projects: for every "Dances With Wolves", which I thought in fact did deserve its' praise and awards, there's a "Tin Cup". His acting ability has always come across onscreen as though Kevin himself knows, if he wasn't so damned good looking, he'd be relegated to background scenes and the best friend of the movie's hero. Not here: He makes what is, really, not that great a storyline - there are far too many side plots, red herrings, coincidences to move the script forward, etc. -, and puts it up at the four star, very close to the five star rating. Had he had better material to work with, and had this movie completely concentrated on Costner's serial killer character, I'd have given it that last star in a heartbeat. He plays, as other reviews note, Man Of The Year Earl Brooks, and while he has money, respect, a loving wife and many other perks, Mr. Brooks also has...issues. He likes to murder people, and he has been trying to beat that demon down for the last couple of years, but he's unfortunate enough to have a yappy, absolutely never-let-up id that only he can see and hear that is played to brilliance by William Hurt (As a matter of fact, why didn't Hurt get more praise for this turn? There's talk of his great, evil take all over the cult chat boards which follow this movie, but Hurt definitely deserved more than cult praise for this film). He gets hold of Kevin's Earl Brooks like a dog with a bone and just never lets up - Mr. Brooks thinks his main problems are being blackmailed and a daughter who may have possibly inherited the killing gene? Uh-uh, he's got the King of Looney Tunes in his own backseat, laughing, pouting and telling Earl to push that accelerator down through to the metal. Whether it is what I have always thought was a somewhat wooden acting ability on Kevin Costner's part finally finding the right role to showcase it - the uptight, perfect "You have no idea what's going on inside me" killer, or if he's a better actor than I ever gave him credit for, I have to admit, I don't know. But I do know that the entire movie could have and should have been about Earl Brooks and his crazy-as-hell alter ego, with Dane Cook as a blackmailer who has no idea what gate of Hell he's just opened (also, surprisingly good - see, I'm willing to admit when I've judged somebody incorrectly) as the one most important side plot, I'd have been more than happy with the screenplay. The detective sideline with Demi Moore is unnecessary, and even the exit ramp added regarding the pregnant daughter and her possible tendencies to follow in her dad's footsteps (or thumbprint, as it were) seems to be padding. They didn't need it with this movie - "Mr. Brooks" is a good/close to great movie because of Kevin Costner and William Hurt, and, since Kevin's the name that brings in the most Googling and queries about this film, you've got to be fair and give the majority of praise to him. It's his movie, he holds it together and he should do movies like this much more often. Watch this with other scary stuff for Halloween, and see if this one doesn't have you getting up and making sure the doors are locked.

Fantastic and must own!!
Another best for Kevin Costner! Hard to believe he could play a person so evil and sinister. This is a replacement DVD for my original I wore out. This movie was well made and the plot is so interesting and intense, you never would have guest the ending. Great acting Kevin Costner!!!! If one likes sinister and evil movies, this is a must own DVD. Fantastic movie everyone should have this in their collection.

Hurt and Costner - What a pairing (but lose Demi Moore)
The first time you "get" what's going on with William Hurt and Kevin Costner (Hurt being Costner's parasitic/nurturing alter ego) in this movie is a great moment. And the scene where they're sitting in his car and the wannabe killer gets out - the expression on both Hurt's and Costner's faces, their glee, their timing, their evil thoughts - perfection. What a fabulous and inspired teaming. I had to write this review because I don't think other reviews mentioned the way Hurt and Costner played off each other. I had never heard of this movie but I find myself watching it over and over. As to Demi Moore, I'm sorry, but she's out of her league and miscast - I'd love to edit her out if I could.

Hidden gem
A friend forced me to watch this, i didn't really want to. Kevin Costner as a murdering dual-personality psycho? No thanks. Then i watched it. And i want to watch it AGAIN. What a gem of a film. Kevin Costner is the PERFECT casting for the main role. His calm persona and intelligent comments (esp to the dimwit Mr Smith) are an absolute delight. In fact it's his understatedness that makes this film a dream to watch. No overacting. No histrionics. I liked this film so much i even liked Demi Moore in it and usually can't stand her! I would have done the ending slightly differently, but overall this film is a must watch. Purely to see the interaction between Mr Brooks and Mr Smith - which is as brilliant a piece of interaction as i've ever seen in any film.
