Great all-in-one Multitool for the price!
I have wanted a multitool for some time, since losing my Leatherman Micra to TSA. The time was right (I had an amazon gift card) and I started to look around at the various options and price points available. I began to look for the options that I found most useful. I wanted a knife for opening letters, packages and strapping. And, of course, the general tool set that most multitools have; saw, screwdrivers, bottle opener, can opener and the like. I also wanted some readily-deployable pliers for working on vehicles and machinery. My price point was a high of around $80, above which, I didn't feel I'd gain any advantage or utility. What helped me make my ultimate decision was the one-handed operation of the pliers, a feature that has helped me more than a handful of times in the months since I got this. The Gerber Diesel also slotted nicely under my desired price point, coming in around $60. When I first got the tool, it did have the issue that others are reporting of some of the black finish coming off on my hands. I wiped it down thoroughly with a damp microfiber towel and it worked perfectly. The finish no longer migrates to my hands or clothing. When new, the pliers are tight, as you'd expect, and the single-handed operation was not a guarantee- sometimes, they'd slide right out and snick into place, other times, I'd get a half-deployed pair of pliers which meant I had to use two hands to fully extend them. I decided that I was going to develop some techniques and practices to ensure that I always get the pliers out. And learned what prevents that from happening along the way. I worked the pliers back and forth absentmindedly while watching a tv show, and that loosened them up perfectly. I did this while watching just one episode of "Arrested Development". I'm pretty sure it'd work with whatever show you're into as well. Here's what I learned (once I had loosened them up): If you hold the handles together and try to extend the pliers with a flick of your wrist, it will never work. The design of the handles and pliers is such that as the pliers extend, they spread the handles apart slightly. So no amount of force will get this to work- they'll either not extend or you'll have flick with so much force that the tool will likely slide out of your grip. If you hold one leg of the tool and flick your wrist, you can usually get them to extend, but the problem is that the pliers and handles can spread open, and you usually have to re-adjust your grip before you can use them. If you flick your wrist in an arc, the pliers sometimes want to fly out of your grasp. You can practice this and get it to work pretty well, though. The way to get them to open consistently is to spread the handles apart as far as they'll go, by holding the handles on the top and bottom (as opposed to the sides of the handles, which is what you'd grab to use the pliers). Then, a small flick and they extend fully, every time. The key is just to spread the handles apart before flicking. Which is a verb I never thought I'd use on Amazon. I've read some complaints about the wirecutters being made of soft metal and my comment would be this: it's a multitool. By definition, it's a compromise. They'll work fine on wires and light metals, but if you expect to cut through something thick (like a heavy wire hanger), you're using the wrong implement. Evidently, Leatherman has replaceable wire cutter blades on some models. If cutting wire hangers is your bailiwick, then you'd probably be better served by those. The knife is sharp, and half-serrated, which doesn't happen to bother me. I've used the serrated portion to cut through some rope and paracord, and it works perfectly. The scissors are nice and sharp and easy to deploy. The can opener, bottle opener and screwdrivers work, well. Because of the handles, you can't use the screwdriver bits in tight spaces. My only issue with the tool is that the icons on the handle (which indicate what tool is where) aren't easier to see- as a result, I keep on pulling out the saw instead of the knife. I'll try some white-out to fill the outline and see if that helps. It's a well-made tool, has a good price point, has all of the features I want, and is almost unnoticeable on my waist. In all, a good purchase.

Photos are of my Gerber after 10 Years!
I have had this thing on my hip for almost 10 years now. It has taken daily use, drops, inclement weather, flat out abuse, being lost for a few weeks, and, unsurprisingly, a few attempted thefts. The slide out action on the pliers is still smooth and effortless, especially with the one handed Gerber whip motion that anyone who has had a Gerber for more than 6 weeks knows full well. It's kind of like a secret handshake. One minor gripe: I wish the cutters were replaceable. Otherwise, this is a very useful set of needle nose pliers. The hinge is still nice and tight with no slop at all. The screwdrivers are surprisingly useful. I wouldn't want to use it as my main screwdriver, but it's useful when a screwdriver is not handy. The blades and screwdrivers still slide out easily and lock in place solidly. Lanyard holder. Huge plus for working at height. The main blade is superior to that of any multi-tool I've ever had. It keeps an edge for an impressive amount of time, and after 10 years will still take and hold a sharpening with a regular household sharpener or whetstone. This tool doesn't feel as substantial as a Leatherman, but it has proven to be very durable. When you feel a Leatherman and a Gerber side by side, the Leatherman definitely has more heft. But don't let the weight fool you. The Gerber can take a serious beating. Another advantage of the Gerber is the slide out pliers. I find I can deploy them much more quickly than the fold out Leatherman. I also had a Gerber Suspension which also has fold-out pliers, and frankly feels cheap and flimsy when compared to this model. Your average Leatherman will have more tools than your average Gerber, but I find this an advantage for the Gerber. The simplicity of the Gerber means I'm not fumbling through a corkscrew or a magnifying glass in order to get to the knife. Sometimes less is more. Even the black finish on this tool has stood the test of time. The stitch logo on the sheath has weathered quite a bit but it's still legible. The sheath itself is still completely intact. There's a place at the bottom where it looks like a hole maybe thinking about forming, and the velcro is certainly not as strong as it used to be. The stitching on the seams and on the belt holder still look as strong as the day I bought it. I have used it working as an electrician on construction sites, these pictures show you what a Gerber looks like after 10 years. My grandfather always carried a pocket knife with him. I carry on that tradition with this Gerber.

Durable, very useful
I give it a four because it's good, but not incredible. Like the other reviews, when it is new, the black paint will rub off in your hand a little, but if you're concerned about that, stick with wal-mart tools. I use this thing every day or something. The knife isn't razor sharp, but decent. I don't see how this thing can be opened with one hand without great effort. It doesn't come with any sort of instructions (sort of like saying, if you're not smart enough to use it, don't bother) and it has a unique opening mechanism that made me think for about 2 minutes before figuring it out. I've cut small branches with the saw, lots of stuff with the knife, used the pliers to help take a part a grill, the bottle opener has opened many beers and the scissors are actually fully functional. I think the regular screwdrivers are too narrow, and the 2 pronged phillips driver won't be able to do too much. I wish there was a flat spot that I could use to pound in small nails, I've tried to use it for small time hammering (finish nails, tacks) but there's literally no flat spots able to be used for this. At first the pliers were really tight, they have loosened up a little bit, and even make a 'click' as they sway in my pocket while I walk.. hard to describe, but it does not affect the usability of the pliers. Lastly, I love the locking tools, because I'm sick of the tools folding in on my knuckles with other multi-tools, but I wasn't impressed with the plastic locking releases. So far they haven't broke, and even survived a few drops, but I think they will be the weakest link.

Top-Notch Quality...(Cool-Tool)
Greetings America...& All! After much research and asking numerous Questions - (& receiving MANY answers...Thank You ALL) I've made my choice & went w/ the Diesel over many others! I mainly like this tool because of its one-hand "flip" opening & closure! It does take a little time to get used to this type of "action" yet, once you get it down, no problems! I also like the fact that it's black! It doesn't reflect the sun or even a flashlight and strain your eyes! Besides that it has that sort-of "worn in" look! Cars are supposed to be shiny, not your tools! Am I right guys? IMHO (of course!) I also really like that the extra blades, & other tools on this are on the "inside" of the unit! Some of the others are on the outside and I could just see myself slipping and ending up cutting myself...Oops, oh well, I didn't really need that finger anyways...but, that the blades and extra tools "lock" is an extra bonus to me and also one of the deciding factors in purchasing the diesel compared to all of the others! There was also some concern as to the black "flaking" & coming off the tool and getting on ones hands... In my experience, I would agree slightly! The reason I say that, is because once I pulled the diesel out of the package, I intentionally rubbed my fingers on it just to see if this were the case: True...it did slightly (rub off) onto my hands, but no "flaking," therefore I took my towel (an old cloth diaper...they are the best towels for wiping off your tools in ones workshop) & wiped the diesel down (LIGHTLY) which also wipes off some of the extra oil they use when manufacturing these Multi-Tools No Problems whatsoever! I absolutely love using this tool! One other note: I've been watching this diesel for a few months now (for the price to go down...) I paid just over $50 & I believe that it's well worth it price in gold! Just working in the shop, or whether you're camping and might need it as a survival tool etc...it's sturdy, well built, & again...IMHO, will last a lifetime! Once again, I'd like to thank all of you that took the time to answer the questions that I posted in regards to my research of the: (Gerber 22-41545 Black Diesel Multiple-Plier with Sheath) Y'all took time out from your day to answer my inquiries & I very much appreciate your most Valuable time & attention! Thanks for reading my review, if you have a question, have an idea, disagree with me or just want to leave a comment, hit me back and let me know what you think! Yours in FREEDOM... NavyDoc Keep... Uses for every day things
So, every day, I put this multi-tool on my belt and go to work. I can almost always count on finding a use for it. Whether it's cutting through a zip-tie, or getting a stuck screw out with the pliers or cutting through something with the scissors. I literally uses this mulit-tool every day. I've never really liked multi-tools, but a guy I work with has a Gerber multi-tool that he got 18 years ago. It is definitely an older model but basically the same idea (the pliers slide out of the tool) He said that his multi-tool is still serving him very well after 18 years of use (we work in an auto parts store, so we use tools a lot.) I think the most useful tool on the actual multi-tool are the scissors. They fold up so conviently and they are both strong and sharp. I probably have used them the most. I've had the Multi-Pliers for about four months now, and I can't put into words how much easier they have made my daily life. I never go anywhere without them. You get a lot of confused and interested looks from people when you whip the Mulit-Pliers out and slide the pliers out. The Leatherman mulit-tools are good, they're a classic and all, but seriously, I can't stand the pinching of the hands when you fold them and go through all the work to expose the pliers. With the Multi-Pliers, you take it out of the pouch and with a simple snap of the wrist, you're ready to us it in any way you can think of. I think the best feature about the Multi-Pliers is that they are easy to use. You can be lazy and use one hand to open them up (I can take out and tool with only one hand.) It's so easy and fun to use. When I first got the Multi-Pliers in the mail, I ripped it out of the box and immediately started practicing with them. I must have spent three hours opening and closing them. By the end of the night, I was able to deftly swish my wrist and open up the knife within 5 seconds. When you first get them, they are kind of rough and sticky, but after an hour or two of opening and closing them, they become naturally lubricated and it is a breeze. There is only one thing that I can leave you with, if you don't like the price tag on this awesome spectacle of human ingenuity, overlook that, save up for a couple of weeks and BUY THEM!!!! This are absolutely the best Multi-tool on the planet.

What's Not To Like?
This is a great multi-tool: It's well made with intuitive and simple locking of tools when they're extended, includes markings etched into the metal that let you know what tools are where before you even have to open it up, the black stainless steel is heavy and doesn't scratch (I took a knife to it), and more! It also came in the mail 2 days ahead of schedule and with the sheath as advertised (run-of-the-mill sheath, but still good). I really like it, and if you're looking for a functional, durable, intuitive and good looking multi-tool, I think you might've just found it. P.S. - Some reviewers complain of some "oil" that comes with the tool in the mail, and my answer is "yes there is some". To be more in detail, it's a tiny amount of oil on some of the tools (I'm guessing it's just excess lubricating oil) that can easily be wiped off with a paper towel and then it never comes back (and the black color doesn't go away at all)! Additionally, as another reviewer helpfully said: if you can't deal with a little oil, maybe you shouldn't get a multi-tool. *********UPDATE********* After using this for awhile, my only complaint is that the plier incorporated is wobbly. It still works, although you can easily jiggle it from side to side. So I'm unfortunately main piece that holds it all together proves to be insecure.

A Great Tool to Keep with you, Solid and Durable
I have worn this Gerber Diesel on my side almost everyday since it arrived. I have used it numerous times and, like a pocket knife, I may have a small bout of panic if I leave without it. I researched and debated on several Multi-Plier/Multi-Tool brands and models before deciding on this Gerber Diesel. I have other Gerber knives and machetes that I like and have used some that I do not like, so I did not limit myself to looking at just the Gerber brand. I chose Gerber, primarily, for it's slide out and locking mechanism on the plier jaws themselves. This prevents the tool from accidentally folding during use. The locks for the additional fold out tools are nice as well, although these accessories locks are made of plastic and I would have preferred metal, at least hardened aluminium, but not polymer. As for the tools, I haven't used them all, I have used mostly the scissors and a couple of the phillips and flat screwdrivers. I would rather the knife have a rounded profile over the straight edge that it has, but again, I also carry a pocket knife so have not needed to use the knife on the Diesel. I plan to buy more of these as gifts. I am very happy with the overall quality and recommend this type of slide and lock Gerber multi-plier to those looking to buy this type of tool. It is priced much better than a similarly equipped Leather-man and is absolutely durable. I rated it 5 stars, I would have rated it 4.5 because of the plastic accessories lock but the plastic lock is better than no lock in my opinion.

What can I say, this is one of the best multi-tools ever made and it exceeded my expectations (none of the online descriptions mentioned a laniard ring, which concerned me, yet it came complete with one). The only way it could be better is if it had a corkscrew (none do) and the sight tool (that model doesn't have scissors. Gerber's Single Handed Opening Technology (SHOT) is still the best mechanism out there when you need you tool asap. I shopped around a fair bit and Amazon offered the best price and to top it off, it was delivered the next day with the normal shipping rate.

The Only multitool I'll carry!!!
I wasn't satisfied with Leatherman, being overpriced, and made with soft steel!! This tool is tough, one hand useable, and affordable. This tool has it all; Scissors, knife, file, saw, Phillips and Flatheads, can & bottle opener. I could never find a multi-tool that has all the tools I want, and Gerber Diesel has it all in MP600 style, not butterfly opening. Now, if the Diesel had all it's tools on the side, like the Gerber NXT, then it would be THE PERFECT multi-tool!!! I give this 4 and a half stars because it really is, nearly the perfect one for me. Get one and see what I mean!!!
