Excellent product and a ๐๐๐๐thank you to the reviewers here !๐๐๐๐
๐๐๐๐๐ฑa review from Mrs. L๐ฑ๐๐๐๐ First of all, I think of all of the products I have ever purchased from Amazon, the reviews of this cat food for cats with kidney disease were the most important for me to read. ๐๐๐Thank you to everyone who expressed their honest opinion about this product. ๐๐๐ The reviews really helped me with a difficult decision to switch to this product which was different than the product my vet originally recommended when my poor cat went into kidney failure. ๐Thank you thank you thank you. ๐ I firmly believe this product, which my cat loved and tolerated better than another product, which needed vet paperwork to purchase . . . Helped my cat to live an extra year. When my cat went into kidney failure, my vet indicated that she had a poor prognosis and probably only had another 6 months or so to live. She recommended a specialized diet for poor renal function. My cat never liked this particular brand of food, but I was resolved to use this food in hopes of helping my cat. It was also incredibly expensive. At times, it was also difficult to order. One day, I attempted to reorder this brand my vet recommended, but it was going to take an extraordinary amount of time to arrive and required a vet prescription. After reading the reviews here on Amazon, of Hi-Tor Neo Diet for Cats, I ordered a case of it. I called my vet to tell her that I had to order a different brand of cat food and she said that this was a good choice and was a good product. Oooookay! My cat loved it. She ate it with gusto up until the last week before she died. I really felt that the Hi-Tor brand gave my cat extra months to live. I think it also made her happy eating it. Sixteen years ago, we found her abandoned in the woods. A tiny, fluffy little tuxedo kitten. She was extremely malnourished and starved for food and attention. She was so tiny when we found her, we thought she was about 8 weeks old. When we took her to the vet, we found out she was probably 5 months old. It broke our hearts to see her so neglected and bedraggled. When she ate kitten food, she growled and choked the food down as fast as she could. Throughout her life, she always had a special relationship with food. Eating was a big deal for her. So, when she enjoyed the Hi-Tor food, we were grateful for the product for more reasons than its benefits for her failing kidneys. And, we really do think it helped her to live longer. ๐๐๐๐๐ Great cat food. It really did what it was supposed to do for our little cat!

Was Worth a Try....
I've been using this product for about 9 months, and have had to take my cat off of it. In the beginning, it seemed to help, but after 3 months, she began to have issues using the bathroom (#2) and had another UTI (not related to the cat food). It was very hard to watch her struggling to defecate or only some of it would come out and she would drag her butt across the floor throughout the house, trying to get the rest out. This was just as frustrating for her as it was for me to have to watch it and then clean up the aftermath. She had very hard stools, and there were times here I actually had to give her an enema to help get them out. Suspecting the food, I put her on regular canned cat food, and she had soft stools again, more energy, and seemed happier. She was diagnosed as having possible kidney issues based on creatinine and BUN testing, and was having trouble with the offerings of the Science Diet products. She lost weight, she seemed a little too lethargic for me, but did make fewer trips to the water dish. The food probably helped correct something the vets *thought* was an issue, but this was not a product that had any sustaining value for my cat. She has been weaned off of this product and onto a mixture of kibble and non-dietary canned cat food. She has gained 2 lbs. back, has been more active, and has done things I haven't seen her do in almost 2 years. I will be taking her to the vet to be re-evaluated, but no more Hi-Tor NEO for her at this point. As with any product, results may marry. Other cats with different conditions may greatly benefit from this product. Thanks!

Excellent, I think
My cat was 20 years old and in severe CRF when I first bought this. She has always been a picky eater, and now was almost a non-eater. This product, combined with extra water and a little low sodium water-packed tuna mixed in, has gotten her to eat well enough that I have ordered it a second time, and would certainly try it with any cat in the early stages of CRF or beyond. Changing her food, combined with vet care that includes perscription thyroid meds, combined with epakitkin supplementation, has all helped tremendously. The thyroid meds alone were not enough. Feeding her Neo Tor and epakitkin seems to really help (as much as anything can help at her age). She refused all other supplements. She has gone from severely anorexic to gaining 1 pound (in 2 months) and having more energy. She never lost interest in life, even when she wouldn't eat, but she has more ability to pursue life now. Not a cure for old age by any means. But worth a try. Shipping was quicker than promised.

Elderly cat loves it!
We have a 20 year old female cat who was diagnosed with kidney disease a couple of years ago. Prior to that, she also had issues with UTI infections. Because of these two things, we looked for a food that was low in magnesium for the urinary benefits and low in phosphorus for her kidneys. We settled on Dave's canned food and Purina One dry food. She never had another UTI, but still had a lot of constipation issues and was losing a lot of weight while not eating much of the Dave's. We ended up back in the emergency vet for a severe bout of constipation. It was at that point that we decided to switch her to Neo and cut out the dry food entirely. She is doing marvelously with the Neo and eats 3x as much of it as she did the Dave's. No more constipation and she's gaining weight. It's also less expensive. Unfortunately, all of our pets ended up with special needs, so we have to balance their care with the expense. So K/D was not an option. After thorough research, Neo seemed like the best route. I have given 4 stars instead of 5 because this product may not be ideal for everyone. It's not the BEST thing a cat with renal disease/failure can be on. And it's high in fat for cats who may have weight issues. Our cat was underweight and doesn't eat much in a sitting, so this is not a concern for us. All of this considered, it was far more important for us to find a low phosphorus and magnesium wet food that our cat will happily eat as her sole diet and this brand has filled that need.

My poor cat suffered form reduced kidney function and really would ...
First, since your are reading this, let me say I am sorry your cat is ill with possible kidney failure and I do hope this or any other product can help you and your cat. My poor cat suffered form reduced kidney function and really would have benefited from a low protein and phosphorus food. Unfortunately, she found the Neo completely unpalatable and refused to eat it. O.K. one cat can be picky eater but as she wouldn't eat it and I didn't want the remainder of the case to go to waste, I tried giving it to a feral colony near my business. On Mondays they are very hungry and usually gobble down whatever gets put out. Even they wouldn't eat this food. Dear food manufacturer why can you not develop a formula that cats find palatable? They won't get the benefit if they can't eat it. I do hope your experience with this product is much happier than mine.

Update!! My cat is back in normal range for the renal testing - DIET CHANGE REVERSED THINGS!
Update: I pretty much had the happiest day ever when I listened to the voicemail left by my vet after his checkup. All I/we were hoping was that things had not gotten worse; I never would have imagined he would be back in a normal healthy range! Diet change works people! I want to say he's been on kidney health food for about 9 months now-- the Neo wet food and Hill's K/D dry food -- and his condition improved. Every cat is different but mine (never been a picky eater to begin with) loves both of them. Since his last checkup, he did put on about 1.5 lbs but he still looks healthy and lean. I am so thankful for this food and can now attest that if in the early stages of kidney issues that food formula can do wonders. My vet has recommended I continue the diet and I am back to believing my little guy will live into his 20s :) ---- All I can review about is the fact that my cat gobbles it down happily just as all the other wet food (transitioned from the expensive/high quality soulistic I had him eating); I have not used long enough to find out if it is improving my 10 yr old aby's recently diagnosed kidney disease. I am fortunate I do not have a picky cat, but I was concerned he would not eat prescription type food for his kidney disease. I have heard so many accounts of cats snubbing the Hill's science diet K/D wet food. Thank goodness I found a detailed website on KD in cats and the various options before just going with what my Vet recommended (and he nor the staff had even heard of this). This was listed as the only non-prescription food out there for addressing the diet of kidney issues. I am hoping I lucked out in picking right from the beginning. I know another cat owner needing KD diet food whose cat refuses to eat the Hill's- this food gave him hope.

You get what you pay for when it comes to renal diets...
So my 18 year old, going on 19 soon, has early signs of kidney issues. I had him on Hi-Tor Felo for a year and a few months ago switched him over to the more renal diet friendly Neo. As with Felo, the batches are never consistent, my cat is a fairly picky eater; some cans he loves, some cans he won't even touch, some cans have a fresh reddish brown color, some have a pale brown old color. Sometimes the consistency is a nice meaty texture, which he loves and will eat. Sometimes it's a waxy, oily and pasty texture which he won't touch. And then there was this... A horrible, rotten, stinking nightmare that I had a feeling would happen one day... It's sad to say that I expected this. There's not much on Hi-Tor, aside from a mediocre website, and some B&M vets that mention it on their websites. The only thing that Hi-Tor has going for it, is that the ingredients are aimed for renal diets and at a fraction of the cost of major labels. Honestly, I don't know where to go from here. Flavor - 3 for inconsistency, literal love - hate. Value - 5 as nothing comes close to the value. Quality - 2 because who knows the quality considering the batches are never consistent... I'll try and think of it as this, Hi-Tor doesn't appear to be a major company, almost mom n pop level, so there's bound to be inconsistency in production. But maybe I'm being too nice? Overall, 2 stars, in the end, it's a Renal Diet option when money is tight. I love my cat dearly, he's my best friend, and it's not wrong to want the best for him... In the end, it's not Hi-Tor's fault, but mine for not being able to afford a better product...

She likes it - MIKEY likes it!
Remember the old cereal commercial about MIKEY? Well, my CRF cat isn't named Mikey, but it's still as shocking that she likes it! At first, neither of my cats, the CRF cat nor the healthy one - cared for this food. However, now that she's feeling a bit better with a holistic vet, she and healthy brother LOVE this food. Little miss picky is eating it with gusto. I am one that believes that the low protein diet for cats is never a good thing (dogs yes, cats no). So most times I mix this with something like another high protein cat food, or human canned tuna - to bump up the protein count. The controversy with the protein levels for CRF animals is basically in a nutshell, dogs are NOT carnivores as are cats, thus low protein is good for them with CRF - but cats ARE carnivores and require protein (and fairly high amounts at that) to live healthy. So, this is a great mixer food for her, and as long as she'll eat it, I'll give it to them both. Thanks NEO for a nice juicy food that tickles her fancy!
