Both are useful. The smaller one I use for heating 1-2 portion of potato/veg. mash but can also be use to melt butter or smaller amounts of chocolate for cakes. The bigger one is better for bigger amounts of any of the above.They fit virtually any saucepan. Very easy to use and to pour from.
