It's not a bad smell, but it's definitely something I haven't smelt before. The smell of waxed canvas maybe, which is still lingering even after about 2 days of being aired. But a couple of uses should take care of that problem.The bag comes with a shoulder strap, with metal clasps at both ends to attach to the bag itself. I actually really like the clasps, they feel sturdy, which is good. The strap itself though, isn't waxed canvas. It's more of the soft cotton straps you get on canvas backpacks.The bag is definitely big enough if you're packing for a 3 to 4 day trip. It would be a little overkill as an overnight bag, unless you insist on bringing spare shoes and lots of toiletries. And even then, there might be a little bit of space left if you packed your clothes compactly. There is one zipper pocket inside, on one side, with another 3 open pockets on the other. On the outside, there are 2 side pockets, both open.The bag comes with 2 small red gingham travel pillows, they have a slight smell too. Airing them out in hopes that they'll be okay, but I think they're more decoration than functional. The stuffing inside isn't very soft, but it would do in a pinch if absolutely necessary.All in all, it's a good buy if you can get it at a discount.
