I bought some tenderleaf organic leaf lard but it had a definite piggy smell. does this lard have an odor?

It has been almost a year since I used it and don't recall any distinct odor. I thought that the flavor was bland and recall in the past that my preferred flavorful lard had a rather bacon-y odor. does this need to be kept cold in a fridge?

Being a city boy, I too had this question and after researching found that actually lard was used as a preservative before there were fridges. Often times it would be used to 'cap' a jar of goods for a period time to keep them fresh (as opposed to canning). I will tell you that I had one jar of this lard that became gray with mold. I did some research on that, and it turned out that it was is fine to use. As long as it doesn't smell badly (rancid), which is caused by particles of something other than the lard in there, it is good to use. I do not refrigerate any of my lards and they have kept for more than 6 months of fluctuating San Diego weather without issue.

Just received my first jar, and it didn't come sealed. Is that normal? Almost looks like someone took a small scoop out already.

The jars I have received appear to be vacuum sealed. When the lid is loosened, there is a distinct sound of the air flowing back into the jar. if you don't get this, I would consider it contaminated
