Can a dog shove their head through the opening, like a large breed puppy and older?

No That is the reason I got it. I hung a small piece of carpet for a door flap and it keeps my dog out completely

Is there a vent? I want to use it on a patio but don’t want rain getting in

Yes, theres a vent at the very top with a filter. If using on a patio the vent would need covered further to prevent rain from entering.

I have a senior chubby kitty, do you think this one will be easy for her to get in and out of? She doesn't like the regular booda size dome.

I thunk size wise it would be fine. It’s a good opening both on the outside and where kitty steps into the litter. My though might be how well does your kitty get around? The drop into the litter part could be a little steep? I have a 6 year old kitty that’s chubby and she loves this box. My skinny 13 year old kitty is a little less fond of it, but will still use it.
