Still works great after lots and lots of use
UPDATE, April 2022: So now I've lost count of how many times I have used this LG Electronics External Drive, for copying CDs to my computer and also to burn computer files to CD media. If I had to guess, I would say it's been used a thousand times minimum, probably more. Still works like new, never a problem reading or burning anything. Lots of miles on this thing now, and performs flawlessly. I'd recommend this one and would definitely buy it again. FIRST UPDATE: After using this LG Electronics External Drive for a couple of months, I just could not be more pleased with it. I've already used it several hundred times. The built-in CD/DVD drive in my desktop computer stopped working after less than 3 years, although I did use it a lot- and I mean a whole lot. I wanted something simple to replace it with, easy to use, and with no bells and whistles and no internal storage. INITIAL REVIEW: When I received this, I plugged this drive into a USB port, and that's all there was to it! Windows Media Player immediately recognized this drive, and my other downloaded CD ripping program just needed one simple settings change click to recognize the drive. I would say this LG Electronics External Drive is comparably fast at ripping and burning CDs as the old one that came on my computer. I have not and likely will not use it to play or burn DVDs, so I cannot comment on that, however my guess is it will work fine for DVDs as well. It does sound a bit louder when operating than my computer's built-in CD/DVD drive, which I expected, as it is an external drive without the metal computer housing around it to pad the sound. I would not say operation is excessively loud, it is perfectly acceptable. The size is nice and small, and although it is light weight the 4 rubber pads on the bottom do a decent job at keeping it from sliding around on the top of my desk. Another review said this comes without a USB cable, which is not the case- included in the package box is a 2 foot mini USB cable. I bought a 3 foot cable thinking it would not come with a cable, but rest assured it does come with one. One cable is plenty powerful to both operate and power this drive with- no second USB connection is needed. There is also a programming CD included, which I'm not sure what is on it, and I doubt I will ever use it because this drive is doing everything I need it to do just out of the box. So, so far so good. It is working great and has been reliable so far. Who's to say whether or not it will last for years, or may not develop problems in the future. Most electronics do. But for less than 30 dollars, it was a good investment, and for ease of operation I feel it would be hard to beat. I know some of the reviews are negative, but so are several reviews on every external drive offered on Amazon. My initial impression is to give this one a try, I think You'll like it. I ordered it one day, and it arrived the next day, which is also a plus.

Good, but in 7-2022, just not sure what to say.
I have a serious problem with LG. Neither LG or Verizon Wireless, the same cellphone carrier that my dad has been contracted with since about 2004. There was no communication from either company org to tell me or my dad that LG has ceased making phones, tablets, and who knows, what else more they do not make. Another problem is that, this external DVD player is the third DVD play I have bought going back to, I think, 2015. The problem that I am having is a worry. A worry that the DVD player will not function, soon, because of lack of updates. All computer equipment needs needs updates every so often for updates. Well, the problem with my phone had me worried, as well. (Oops, I was to buy a new phone, today and completely forgot. LOL) The reason why I need a new phone is because there was an LG update, sometime in the past up from about a year to a year and a half ago, according to Verizon tech support. Well, that update is the problem. It seems to be that LG in the update, removed all of their software and Verizon dumped their's in the phone. That new software is all that is running the phone. In the last three months, I have had two serious medical conditions. One of them being insomina and the so-called medical professionals are not really helping me. Because of this problem, I may have used the phone once, during that time. I was even forgetting to bring the phone with me to buy food from the store or a restaurant. Ya, fun times, you know what I mean? (LOL) So, I did not know there was any problems. Also, the problems with the phone became to be worse. Sometimes, I need to work the phone to get it off of the lock screen to restart (reboot) the phone, just to unlock the phone for usage. The phone is next to a paperweight. I am worried, now, about the DVD player. I am on number three, since about 2015, as I said, above. Well, I am not going to put myself in this situation with LG, again. No communication, at all, and my phone is next to junk. Also, the DVD player just activated for no reason when I was typing a document. I have no idea why the player did that. That has not happened since I bought it, back in 2020. A lot of you on here have great stories, about the player. So, do I. I highly recommend LG's products over any other brand. But after I am in knowledge of this, after all these years using their phones, going back to before 2015, I am just in shock. I thought they were not doing the new stupidity that Sony has been doing, since the year: 2000. I guess, many of us that thought that way, at some point in the last year and a half, are wrong, and that is not our fault. So, plain and simple, as of now, I am not playing any games. I just noticed that this player came out on Amazon before 2015. That means, it has been on the market for so long that, it could be dead as far as any tech support or updates. I am not happy about this, one bit. We need to find a reliable tech company. We thought that back in the 90's, that Panasonic and Sony were the way to go. But then their stuff was slowly disappearing, and rumors were abound that they were not making their VCRs and TVs. My old Sony from 98, it is not known whom built it. The computer in the TV when plugged into an old Dell laptop computer named a company of a Japanese firm, I had neve heard of. So, really, can we as people rely on a company to stick around and keep on making products that are good? I just really would like to rely on a company from a customer point of view, and have not been able to do that, in 22 years. BTW, I am only, just turned 43. Ya, time goes by fast. LOL

Great drive for ripping cd’s!
A workhorse! Ripping 100’s of cd’s with this and it’s pretty fantastic. Speeds could be a bit higher but still quite good for the price.

Worked ok, until it didn't
This DVD unit was ok at first. It's a little plasticky and flimsy feeling, but it did what I needed it to do and was inexpensive. However, after approximately ten uses (in retrospect, at $2 per play) over the first few months (in other words, when it was too late to return it), the unit malfunctioned and became useless. Specifically, it accepted and loaded a DVD in the tray as usual, made the typical whirring noises like it was going to work, then some soft clicking noises like it was shifting around and resetting, followed by more whirring, then it went silent and would neither play nor eject the DVD. Each time the eject button was pushed it made whirring noises like it was going to eject, but at the moment the tray usually slid open, it went silent. Hoping for a reset, I tried unplugging and reconnecting the cord with the same results (whirring noises followed by silence and no eject). After several attempts I eventually had to give up and break the unit open to retrieve the DVD. In reading the reviews, it appears some buyers have good luck with this unit . I did not.

It works fine but it's defective
I got this thing yesterday. Shipped fast. Came in a brown bubble wrap envelope. Inside the envelope was the sealed box for the product. Packaging wasn't damaged. Comes with everything you need including a short USB/mini-USB cable. It also comes with a disc of "media suite" programs. These programs come already installed on most Windows PCs these days. It's programs for DVD reading, webcam, etc.. I downloaded a program/flash/firmware thing and installed it on my computer. But I mainly bought this to burn CD-Rs with imgburn. The only problem is that mine is DEFECTIVE. When I press the button to open the disc tray , nothing happens. It makes a short stuttering sound and then gives up. Looking at the instructions I found out there is an "emergency eject" hole that I had to put a pin into to open it. But I need to do this every single time I need to open it. I'm not sure how common this is, but without that eject hole, this product would be completely useless. I may have to send this back to get another one. There is a one year warranty included. The only reason I'm not rating this much lower is that the product does in fact work. I would have preferred a slightly slower burning disc drive though. Ideally I would want something like 4x but the lowest this one goes is 10x. However, it burns the discs perfectly every time, so no complaints there. I burned about 10 or so discs in a row with no issues whatsoever. I'm using this on my Windows 10 laptop that doesn't have a disc drive and there have been no issues whatsoever. Some people seem to have problems on operating systems later than Windows 7. But in my particular case it recognizes the drive perfectly and I have no issues on the software side. Overall it's a good price and I would rate this product 5 stars, but due to the manufacturing failure on the eject button I have to penalize it.

Not very reliable
I bought this to use for burning CDs and it works OK. About every three discs it stops spinning in the middle of the burn and I need to eject the disc and start over. UPDATE (5/31/16): This does not work well at all. It hardly ever successfully burns a CD anymore - not sure what the deal is. I do like the compact size, but that's about it I would not recommend buying this. UPDATE (4/2/17) I hate this thing so much. It's so reliably bad I can hardly stand using it. I feel like I need to squeeze a little more use out of it though before throwing it in the trash and getting another one.

Great device, pay attention to USB cable type
Tried this with an old CD with a lot of scratches and it works really well, so super happy about that. I would say the price is very fair also. I'm giving it 4 starts because the USB cable it uses is an older standard that could be a pain to replace if lost or damaged.

Compact, easy, good quality!
I was pleasantly surprised with this burner! It arrived much quicker than it said it would, and it's very light and burns all of my discs quickly and easily (I haven't got even a single write error yet, even with my tricky DVD+R DLs). My computer recognized it instantly and it burns quietly.
