New Crewel: The Motif Collection: More Exquisite Designs in Modern Embroidery

I used to love hand stitching, embroidery and crewel. The simple act of manipulating the needle and thread through the fabric is relaxing and fun. But oh....those ' hodie-do ' designs..... This book is a fresh take on an old craft, making it relevant to this millennium. I love the color combinations and designs! You can purchase all of the crewel wool from her website that she used for the designs in the book. This book made an old crafter smile :)

I was aware (from my grandma) that crewel work is a type of embroidery, but I learned from New Crewel that the definition of crewel is the use of wool thread to create any embroidery stitch on linen fabric. Apparently, it originated in 17th Century England with the Jacobean look (which is currently quite popular). Then it had a huge resurgence in the 60's when it seemed everyone was making crewel owls, cute big headed children and the like. One thing I immediately noticed in New Crewel is that some of the patterns reminded me a lot of the designs I loved to make with my spirograph toy when I was a child. So, I wasn't surprised to see the author mention that she based them on exactly that. New Crewel uses traditional tools and materials, but takes a modern spin by creating motifs that are based on nature and organic art forms. There are patterns in the back, but I've been mostly using the enclosed CD that has all the patterns on it in jpeg format, because it makes it really easy for me to resize and print the patterns. In addition to the modern crewel designs, there are also several projects in the back of the book that give ideas as to how to use them in items like clothes, baskets, pillows and more. My favorite way is to display them in an embroidery hoop that I hang on the wall. So far, I have had fun making a dahlia, twinkling stars and also a simple marigold design. I'm really glad that there has been a renewed interest in crewel, I really enjoy using these techniques New Crewel and it also brings back wonderful memories of my grandmother!

I have to admit that my crewel working days have long been over, but when I saw this book a quilt design popped into my head - and it won't go away! I have 'a thing' for circles and these are all circle designs !! Beautiful, whimsical, perfect circles. The books begins with a chapter entitles "New Crewel Basics" which I think is a perfect refresher for those who have done some crewel work before or for beginners who know nothing of the joy of gliding wool threads through linen or twill fabrics. Linen types, threads, needle choices, hoops, design tracing, knotting and supplies are covered in this chapter. Most importantly this chapter includes detailed diagrams of all of the stitches that you will use in making the designs contained in the gallery of designs that follow. Next up is my favorite part of this truly wonderful book - the "New Crewel Design Gallery". Each design includes a border strip that has the necessary information for making the design; fabric, thread, stitches used, how to finish and any applicable notes for the pattern are included here. A gallery of projects for the designs follows - pillows, skirts, bags, etc. Now - here's the thing - this book also contains a CD of all the motifs in the book. Can you say perfect?! Yes, I'm really happy with this fab book of inspired circular designs !

This is an amazing book. Great designs. But the disk cannot be accessed and I cannot get website help, as it no longer exists and the publisher has rebranded and the imprint has gone. The publisher does not list author. This happened between 2016-2022, from my research. If you want this book, please be careful as there may be issues with the disk, and there is no other support.

I loved Katherine Shaughnessy's first book and The Motiff Collection goes beyond my expectations. Her explanations are clear and thoughtful and most of all, inspiring. I love that her designs and ideas are contemporary and achievable. The first book inspired me to try crewel embroidery, with great results and this second one inspires me to become even more creative. Great job!

Although the designs are somewhat basic and repetitive, they do exhibit the use of each stitch described in the stitch directory. The designs are easily reproduced and manipulated. I have not yet loaded the CD included.

I borrowed this book from the library and ended up buying it. If you love motif designs then this book is for you lots of great patterns for crewel or embroidery.

Meine Freundin kann so toll sticken. Kreuzstich, ABER sie stickt total modern auf ihre Kleidung an dezenten oder unerwarteten Stellen. Fledermäuse und Totenköpfe in schwarz, Winkekatzen etc. Ich habe es auch versucht, aber ich bin nicht ordentlich genug, ich kriege das nicht hin. Und nun kam dieses Buch!!! Hach, man kann auch tolle Sachen machen, wenn man etwas schlampiger und ungeduldig ist. Das macht mir so viel Spaß! Aber VORSICHT, starker Suchtfaktor!!!

Lovely book with modern designs.

刺繍用の細い毛糸のような糸で作った刺繍モチーフ集。 普通の刺繍糸の作品と違うので、特徴や注意点もしっかり書いてある。 大きい図で、わかりやすく書いてあり、文章部分も多い。 英語出来なくても何とかなりそう。 モチーフを使った作品のほとんどはリネンにししゅうしてあるのだが、 作品そのものはとてもおしゃれ。 特徴として、糸が表に出ている部分が多く、糸が引っかかりそうなので、実用としてはいかがなもんか・・・ CDに図案が入っているので、簡単にプリントアウトして使うことが出来る。
